Well as an avid shooter and hunter of 20 years it takes my breath away and makes me sick to my stomache that I was careless enough today to overlook something so stupid and a staple of basic safety, I'm ashamed and embarrassed to tell everyone about this but I feel it needs to be said as real life reminder to slow down and make sure to always remember SAFETY FIRST.. So here it goes...
I picked up my LRPV from my gunsmith yesterday after having the action bedded in the stock, so I get it home last night and get the scope base on and mock up the brand new sig zee rings (bought from mystic precision which is great guy to deal with) and puting on the Nikon 6-24x50.. The gun is looking awesome, and finished off by installing my tacpro cheek riser..
So I wake up this mornjng and do a final mount of the scope and get everything ready but it's storming out snowing like crazy and windy, so I decide to wait till this afternoon to shoot which is killing my because I have been dieing to try out the new equipment.. So I get everything set up and go to load a round in the chamber but it's a little too big and the bolt won't close.. So I get it out of the chamber by running the cleanjbg rod down.. This happens two more times so now I'm thinkkng there must be an issue with not being sized properly as these are reloads, found a round that went In Nice and bolt closed nicely so in excited now I can shoot so I line up the shot just perfect and pull the trigger...
An instant wave of #### hits me in the face from my bottom lip up to my forehead, and a lot concentrated around my eye and nose, and the gun made a different noise.. So I am shocked and startled from being peppered on the face.. I touch my face and can feel blood running down my face... I now (withing 5-7 second) realize what has happened.. I had gotta so excited and in a rush to shoot this rifle that I had forgotten to remove the cleanjbg rod from the barrel that I had used to remove the other rounds that had jammed..
. Needless to say I am extremely lucky that the barrel didn't explode .. I checked the gun over and could not see anything fractured or burst from the outside, I did have to pry the bolt handle open and pry the bolt out of the receiver, I found that it was tight because the bolt head was bent over from the rapid expansion of the casing and the pressure trying to force it out of the chamber, the pressure opened the flash hole right up and anihalated the end of the casing but I noticed there is two holes in the action (factory) that had acted as a pressure relief, enough pressure must have escaped through the primer hole and around the bolt face and out those holes...
So now I have the barreled action that has a bolt that is f@cked, a barrel with a bullet stuck in it as well as most likely a piece of cleaning rod as well as a granaded casing stuck/jammed in the chamber.. Not sure of the condition of the action.. Everything's fate will be decided on Monday when it goes to the smith...
So as I said before, I am ashamed and embarrassed to have made such a stupid mistake, but I feel that regardless of how I feel it is more important to to put this up as a reminder of how easy it can happen, I have always drilled "safety first" into all my friends heads and my wife.. Never thought this would ever happen to me bit it just goes to show it can happen to anyone... Everybody is perfect until their first "accident"...
