Oops...@&$k...thankful I'm ok

I wonder how much less damage you would have suffered to your face with a conventional port... you are lucky not to lose an eye.... The front baffle certainly did it's job...

One of the first things I thought of was "I'm wearing eye protection from here on out".. And yes I thjnk in this case even tho I was extremely lucky to get off so easy, I think if it were a right port I wouldn't have been touched..

Lucky and a good reminder... wasn't even a few weeks ago that this happened to a guys .338.

Always wear eye protection. I usually do, but once while mountain biking, my glasses started fogging. I took them off and wouldn't you know it, a branch caught me in the eye - voila torn cornea. Fortunately it wasn't too severe & it healed. All the gear, all the time.

Thanks for the post. I want to say I pull the bolt and examine the bore every single time, but I'm thinking I've missed that step a time or two before. Good reminder.

You made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Fortunately, you got to walk away from it!

Thank you for posting this as it gives ALL of us a chance to learn & reflect on what could happen if you don't pay attention.

My opinion, count your blessings & go buy another rifle!

Again, glad you are okay!

Cheers
Jay

Thank you for that, it really was hard to post up for fear of being ridiculed for my mistake but decided that it was too important of a lesson to not share it with everyone, and again like you say.. If it saves just one person from making the same mistake then it was worth posting..

Can we slow clap for the action also? Anytime a barrel blockage happens and no one gets badly hurt, I tend to thank nameless engineers in a cubbyhole somewhere.

I can't agree more... it's why I hate the alteration of a 700 action by the installation of part of the Sako extractor system. That 'simple' step completely destroys the integrity of the design.

Glad you're ok.

I would just write the whole rifle off.
It sustained an excessive over pressure.
It may not do that next time.
Yes I know it's about $1500 but I bet your eyes and face are worth a lot more than that.

A true Gun nut of the highest order, manning up to a simple oops that lots others would hide! To quote the anti's "if it saves just one life"

Here here.

Your safe. That's all that matters. Least you know for next time. Pass the word and make sure others know to not do it :)

I thank you for your honest intro to the story. And good lesson relearned. I'd toss the whole thing and start from a new rifle as I'm a bit wary of potential unseen danger. And I'm not allowed on my range without eye protection, zero tolerance, for this among many reasons. Best wishes for happy shooting forward from here.

Thats an easy mistake to make when your all exited about trying out a new rifle. at least your ok. Hopefully the gun is repairable, if not at least you still have your eyesight wich is worth a lot more than any rifle.
