I just pickup up an M14 and have fitted a USGI FG stock. How do I stop the op rod spring guide retaining pin from moving to the right and letting go of the guide? I am looking for the tried and true method which I'm sure hjas been worked out by board memebers.

TIA

Chris

Epoxy a short piece of popsicle stick into the stock. I think one of the stickies must tack about this, it usually goes hand-in-hand with the filling of the selector cut.

I don't think I will bother filling th cutout. I am a form following function type, it doesn't bother me. I guess I can just epoxy a piece in there.

Cheers,

Chris

at the top of this forum page there is a sticky by skull boy, m14 faq's and modifications, shows exactly how to do what you are asking ;)

The quick and easy fix is just to glue/expoxy/double sided tape a shim (popsickle stick, etc) to the side of the stock to keep the pin from "walking" out.

The nice fix is in the FAQ post I did up that has been linked in this thread.

I considered modding teh stock with sticks and compound, etc. I finally just snuck some of the ol' lady's nailpolish and put a huge drop by the pin. It's an ugly red color, but it has kept that pin in place for hundreds (probably thousands) of rounds.

Cheap and easy. If I want to remove it. I'll just use thinner.

ya, i just got a new norc m14...the pin seemed snug for the first 40 rounds then it poped out once (had to push it back in, then it stayed). does this happen with more expensive (ie springfield) m14's? this seems like a fairly major design flaw that could lead to combat reliability issues yes?

The retaining pin on the Real M14s and the Springfield M1As is longer then the Norinco pin so it won't walk out.

The pin was originally a part of the select fire set up on USGI M14s.The pin interacted with the connector arm. This longer pin was carried over to the M1A, but not the Norincos.Plus the Norc pin is a smaller diameter.

I made a little dam out of gas tank repair putty. Also called Fasteel or something Works GREAT. There is no way the pin can walk out when it's in the stock.

When shooting with Platnumbob, I was getting pretty crappy accuracy and the spring guide wasn't secure and was flopping all over the place. How much would this have affected accuracy? It was my first time shooting the M305, so I don't really have a baseline.

If your op rod was not secured, that would affect accuracy. Not to mention that the magazine would not be in it's proper position and feed problems or problems removing the mag can occur.

People replace the original flat sided op rod spring guide with the round National Match versions to prevent the op rod spring from going all "snakey" when compressed. This modifaction will enhance shot to shot consistency.
