Open bolt on 10/22?

Is the bolt on a 10/22 supposed to stay open when the magazine is empty. Mine always closes and I end up dry firing every time because I don't realize I'm out of ammo.

No factory provision to sense mag empty and hold bolt open.

Cabella's US has a kit on clearance that uses a modified factory mag, and creates that feature. Me, I can't imagine its harming the firing pin. Have you seen the mod that allows you to close the bolt without fiddling with that bolt release lever? Its probably in the rimfire section. You dremel out a small tang and then the bolt closes just by giving the bolt a pull back and releasing it.

The firing pin on the gun is recessed in the bolt, so dry firing a 10/22 doesnt do any damage to it..

I plan on doing the auto bolt release when I do a trigger job to it. Seems a lot easier than that silly switch on the bottom.
