Open forcing cone on shotgun too?

I had my choke opened up from full to modified when I got my old 870Wingmaster a few years ago, but now I keep reading that guys have their forcing cones opened up too.

Is that really necessary to successfully alter a shotgun designed originally to shoot lead to a steel shooter?

I asked my 'smith and he said it might reduce the recoil a bit, but he didn't suggest that it would improve the pattern.
 
:) Openning forcing cones will reduce recoil and improve patterns somewhat. It will not improve the value of your gun. Is it worthwhile on a 870 for hunting? NO! For clay shooting? Yes! One does not shoot sufficient shells to make it a money wise decision for hunting, unless one has an excess supply of CDN $. If one would shoot 10K a year, then every improvment helps.

It reduces pellet deformation. So lead shot will see a tightening in patterns, sometimes very significantly. Steel won't deform as readily, so its patterns aren't determined so much by pellets getting deformed. But there will be a benefit if you shoot large steel shot. Imagine trying to hammer large ball bearings through a tube with a constriction. Not a very smooth transition. I can see obvious dents in the cone my on A5 from large steel shot, so I've stopped using the big stuff until I get it reamed.
 
There was a lot of talk about getting your forcing cone lengthened back when steel first became manadatory. Apparently if you didn't get it done your #### would fall off.

Many years later Mine is still where it should be and my forcing cone was never lengthened. Still, something to think about, especially if you like to tinker with things.
