I cannot shoot an open sight nearly as well as I can a peep sight. This is why I install a peep sight (or an optic) whenever possible.

But there are a few rifles (like a MN M44, a SVT40 and a SKS) that I don't want to butcher up with optics. I find that opening up the rear notch to a wider square notch with a square needle file.

MY eyes are also getting old and tired. I used to say that scopes were for pussies. Well, call me a pussy. I like the SKS sights. They are very distinct. My Mauser vz24 on the other hand, I just guess were he sights are and shoot.

Gander how close to the receiver is your stock weld with the SKS? I go close like shooting an AR, I find this provides more light to the sides and better sight picture if your eyes were around when Kennedy was inaugurated.

Yes, I use shooting glasses. The right lens is not bi-focal, and has a prescription something like a reading glass prescription, that focuses at around 2 feet. This allows me to focus on the front sight of a rifle or pistol.

No one can focus on both the front and rear sight of a rifle. This is why the peep is so good. By opening up the rear sight I have a better view to center the front post in it. I need the extra white on both sides of the front sight.

I normally file my front sight to a fine, pin-type rather than open the rear. While I have peep
sights on some of my rifles with a shorter sight radius, I still prefer the open sights.
I saw JFK inaugurated live on TV and sadly, also saw his demise, live as well.:(
