open sight 10/22 build

Been thinking about this one for a while now and finally made it happen. It's an older ruger receiver with metal trigger group and kidd trigger kit installed. Nodak Spud sights, tac sol barrel, Dlask bolt and extended charging handle. I stole the stock off my DAR and I think I like it on this one. The DAR will get a new stock. Overall I really like how it turned out. Nice, light and handy.




 
Well, this is exactly the vision I have been having of a "want" rifle. I have seen the DAR rifles on the DLASK sight, and those pretty well fill the bill as well. What was it you found wanting in the DAR that inspired you to build this one? I want open sights and was not sure how to get them as most aftermarket barrels have no provision for a front sight. Now I know about the Nodaks that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for sharing! db

I like it a lot. I'm a big fan of those Nodak sights, and tacsol although I do wish they made a shorter barrel still, without a suppressor shroud.

Not much left "wanting" in the DAR, it's a great rifle. this one is a lot lighter and going to be quicker to handle and point (I've been looking a lot into speed steel courses lately). Robbing the guts from the DAR for this one and replacing with Kidd parts and a brimstone trigger group just adds a bit of "uniqueness" to it as well.

This is the new reality I guess. You are right.....you really gotta want em!!
 
I'm doing a regular indoor defensive shoot that my club does with rimfire. This requires good speed and fairly good accuracy. I am shooting a 10 22 with tech sights. Works good, and I don't need anything else, but my mind keeps going to something like the DAR or what you have shown us here. I am starting to collect parts for a budget build like yours. Thanks again for your insight. db

Sounds cool. For speed I would stay away from the DAR as it is a heavier Rifle, and I think you might lose some open sight accuracy going with a super short (8-12") barrel. I would build on what you have with a light barrel like Tactical solutions. I really want to get my hands on a whistle pig as well. You can't go wrong with a Kidd drop in trigger kit if budget is an issue but it's not the cheapest by any means. If you do go with a DAR, make sure to get a flat top receiver if you want to add open sights to it.

My loose plan, for now, is to buy the Dlask receiver and bolt, buy a compact barrel off EE (16.5), move the tech sights off the rifle I have now, buy the BX trigger and of course the boyds overmoulded stock. Could upgrade the barrel later. Hoping this will result in a lighter rifle, with a better trigger and most importantly amp up the tactical cool factor. Thanks for all of your suggestions so far. db
