Open sights on the island

I hunted with my M14/305 (.308) with open sites quite a few times before I sold it to get a 7mm Tika, with a 3-9. Still use the Rem. 870 in shotgun only areas.

I have always thought open sites are great for the island with all the small blocks and dense brush. I would love to have a Tikka T3 Battue or a Steyr Scout in .243 Win. However I don't think either comes in this cal. & I'm broke anyway :-(

Shot several deer on the island with open sights, unfortunately packing the old '94 cost me a chance at a great buck at 300 yards. True most shots are less than 100 but across valley shots can occur.
 
I dont see why one couldnt shoot a deer with open sights. I may be attempting to this deer season. But we shall wait and see.
 
I think its great for hunters to hunt deer with open sights.As a new hunter 30 years ago I shot my first deer with open sights.I think its great for new hunters to shoot a deer with open sights,then go to a scoped rifle. So get out there and a deer and not the paper ones a the ranges guys. good luck

I have shot bears, moose,deer and rabbits with open sights.I am going to continue using them as long as possible.
Those new fangled scope thingies are fun too..........:D
 
Open sights are great for hunting. The Island does range from 50 yards to 300 or 400 yards. I find myself in the 200 to 300 range for the most part.

I've shot Grouse, and bunnies from 20 to about 100 yards with open sights on my 30/30 win, pump .22, 12 gauge shotgun, and SKS. :)

So no deer yet (due to pesky condos springing up in my patches), but considering the size of the target in comparison to a deer then I see no problem if you do your part and practice at the range before heading out.

I try to get to our local range at least once per week, and two to three times during this month as a pre hunting warm up...know your equipment. :)
 
When I was living in Comox I loved carrying my Jungle Carbine #5, took 1 black bear 2 blacktail bucks 3x blacktail does.
It loved 150gr Federals.
The longest shot was the balck bear at approx 100yds.
