Opening up Savage bolt face

Try posting a WTB add on the EE. Someone might have one as their is a few other calibers that use the same bolt head (.441)I believe. I think some have had luck using a .473? 308 bolt face as well.

That .473 bolt face will work just fine and likely easier to find in Canada.

OP, Mystic Precision, a banner sponsor, should be able to help you out. He seems to be able to get parts out of the US pretty quickly and may even have what you need in stock. He likes working on Savage rifles.

The reason most smiths don't like opening up bolt faces is that they are hard as hell and can be difficult to cut, especially on smaller lathes found in most shops. The ejection plunger hole may have to be moved as well as the extractor will have to be replaced. It's a bigger job than most realize.
 
You can't open it up very well because of the way the extractor is located. Every case diameter in a Savage uses the same extractor. The extractor is held in place by spring tension on a ball detent underneath the extractor. The spring and ball are parallel with the bolt in a hole drilled into the locking lug. The varying sizes of bolt heads vary the location of this hole further or nearer from the bolt centerline to keep the extractor aligned with the rim of the case. You COULD conceivably modify an extractor to make it work on the larger bolt face in it's old location but I've never seen it done. I've bought factory bolt heads from Numrich Gun Parts shipped to Canada. Very affordable.

Picked up exactly what you're after from them about a year ago. Minimal paperwork/fees - just purchase price and shipping, if I recall.

It actually arrived waaaay earlier than expected/predicted - odds of that happening twice from them would be pretty low, tho - they're usually fairly pokey...
 
Reamers and pilots are not firearm parts. Just because you ordered gotch from the States without any issues doesn't mean that you can get gun pars as easily.
