Operating Handle for Rem 1100 Fell Out ...

I just acquired a new to me Remington 1100 Trap. The code on the barrel is CB and apparently indicates it was manufactured on April in one of these years: 2007, 1981, 1956, 1933.

It's in super nice shape so I'd have to think 1981 or 2007 ... if I was guessing I'd say 1981.

Anyways, on the initial range day the operating handle fell out, luckily I was able to recover it ... however it must have been a problem for the previous owner as well as it had copious amounts of JB Weld on it.

I disassembled the gun and have cleaned the JB Weld off, the ball and spring retainer seem to be working properly with good spring, the handle seems to fit in properly and is fairly tight however I'm told by vets at the club that it should be harder to pull out.

So a couple of questions ...

1) Apparently there are two types of handles, how do I know if I have the correct one for this gun?
2) Any suggestions on how to make it snug in a little tighter?

Thanks

This is the one I have now:

I had a similar problem in mine as well.
I tried a 3'' in a 2-3/4'' chamber and it flew out in the gravel pit.
Found it fortunately and since then it has stayed put and I dont experiment with 3 inch shells anymore.
Sorry , dont have anything more useful than dont do what I did.
Have you tried Google and see if you can spot the difference in the parts ??
Western Gun Parts in Edmonton .....Ellwood Epps in Ontario and have make model and serial number ready along with your credit card details all before you sit down to make the call.

Hey thanks ... from what I can tell from research I do have the correct part as I do have the carriage with the detent ball ... but I'm no expert so want to be sure. Also hoping others have come up with a solution so it doesn't happen again? Prob will order a spare ...

There is a posting on Remingtonowners.com site that says the "N" prefix on your receiver serial number designates 1978 manufacture. The "V" suffix designates 2 3/4" 12 gauge. As previously posted, the barrel that is on the receiver now could have come from anywhere - may not have left the factory with this receiver. Apparently a phone call to Remington with that serial number can verify the year that your receiver was made.

Pics of proof marks on barrel and the serial ... so you are thinking I have a 2007 gun?

Nope IMO you have a pre 87 gun ( wood for sure is around 76-81 )with the wrong operating handle which is why it is more than likely falling out. I have never tried a new style handle in an old gun
It is a fixed choke barrel which makes the barrel prior to 86
Cheers
This is the correct handle the first design

CGN is amazing. So why can't we figure out what the dingle is on the stock of The Champ's old Winchester SLR?

IMO cause the old guys that used that rifle are all dead and nothing was passed on sadly :(
Same will go with this stuff someday
I bought my first 1100 in 65 and still have quite a few :)
Bought a new 1100 in 87 for the choke tube barrel and had to remove the handle every time in the browning hard case I used to transport it so lost it eventually to find out the hard way it was not like the other 1100's I had

LOL Then again I am one of the old farts now that would go to all shoots back in the day with my 1100's and enough spare parts in a tackle box to build a few guns
Still have the old box somewhere and a fair amount of these old kits for those that can remember them. Not sure if they still make them or not

Funny tho ... when I took it all apart I do have the carriage with the spring loaded detent ball that clicks into the notch in the operating handle I have ... so it appears to be the correct handle ... so that would make mine the newer model wouldn't it? I have never seen the old style carriage ...

You have vintage wood and barrel 100%. What you have for a RECEIVER I don't know but 78 more than likely from what I can see of it. Is it stamped TRAP
The bolt is scrolled on the chrome vintage one and plain on the new style except for the odd one like some 86 models
I cannot tell from the small pic what you have
Also the bolt could have cracked over the years which was common and replaced with a newer bolt/bar assembly

Even if it is the second generation replace the handle regardless since one can see wear on your handle and check that bolt over well for wear and cracks
Not rocket science here.
If old style bar you have the wrong handle if new style your handle set up needs to be replaced with new
There is only two handle options based on the bolt / bar(s) that I know of and vets are telling you it is too easy to pull out so change it with new parts
Cheers

Regarding questions:
1) operating handle is this the correct one? Remington only offers 3 types of handle now, 12g, 12g nickel plate and 20 g this looks the same as the one I have 12 g model F92034.

2) how to make tighter? Something could be worn out. I would check clearances of the operating handle and the action bar. If both are good I would check operation of the detent ball and spring.

You also asked about a Super Cell recoil pad. I replaced my old recoil pad with the SuperCell #19471 fits perfect I used my old screws the ones that came with the Supercell were too large I thought and I did not want to drill out the stock to make the larger ones to work
