hi guys, need an opinion on aluminum scope mounts: regular and HD mounts.

is aluminum good for high power rifles? how are they if compare to steel bases?

what would be another option for good scope bases?

thanks

I always take steel mounts before considering Aluminumumum! As I like the workmanship that is put into them, but nothing wrong with well made aluminun made correctly. If you are making a light weight hunting rig this is the only way to go! I just think aluminum looks very very cheap, and you ussually don't ever get you money back if you go to sell them, just my experiance? look at what an Weaver style aluminum ring sell for resale, then look what a set of Sakko or Tikka rings sell resale ,atleast 5 times more, regards Dale Z!

There is nothing wrong wrong with the EGW mounts. I have one on a 6mmBR, 7mmRM and 30-06. NEVER a single issue. I also sold one to Dogleg who put it on a 338 Edge and has no problems.

They hold up perfectly.

Now if my rifle meant life or death to me and I was using it to break down doors and dig a foxhole, yea I would want steel bases and rings. That is not the case.

I owned both versions for my Savage (granted it's a .308, braked.)

While the weight savings are definitely there for the Aluminum, I eventually got the steel version because I fear inevitable corrosion between the mount and the action (i.e. two different types of metal.)

Having said that, it cost me over double for the steel version (custom LH port, 20MOA).

I've had an EGW aluminum scope mount on my 700P for 2 years now with no issues. That being said; I just ordered a new B&C stock for it and will have a new barrel on very soon so I decided to go with a steel base from Ken Farrell. I figure since weight won't be a concern (as this is going to basically be just a target/comp gun) and I only want to mount the base once and forget about it so I'm going for the gusto.

If I was deploying to a hot and sandy location, the decision to use a steel base can easily be made. Since I'm too ugly to deploy, the EGW aluminum base from www.allengunworks.com works for my M700 SPS Tac .22-250 (yes, it's a goofy hybrid). ;)

I'm happy with my EGW aluminum bases! Then again, I'm only hunting earth pigs!

Here is my older (now sold) M700 SPS with a .223 takeoff LTR barrel that was re-chambered to .22-250 by one of the best gunsmiths I've had the privilege of knowing.

Cheers,
Barney :p

Just put one on my Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308

Its a really nice base and looks great! Fits the "tactical" look really well. I cant complain about it... just put it on today and hit the range right after and so far so good!

^^Could be chambered for a cartridge that kicks like a mule.
I love my egw bases...the only aluminum base I have ever seen get destroyed was a buddies cheap thompson center base on his pro hunter in 375 H&H....the recoil was to much for it
