Opinions about Norinco JW-25A

I fired mine for the first time yesterday. 60% misfire rate, so I'll have to troubleshoot that. I did adjust the trigger, come to think of it.
Lever arms had (rusty) 10 round mags for it on Saturday.
I have the little offset scope.
If you get it for a good price it is good, if a little heavier that it needs to be.
I you get it cheap, or you really like K98's go for it, otherwise it is unremarkable.
Accuracy seemed OK, I wasn't able to put it thru it's paces.

I have a JW25, it's kinda heavy for a youngster to carry. Fit and finish are very nice for a norinco. Accuracy is average, nothing to rave about. I had no misfires attributed to the firing pin or bolt. The trigger is hard and needs to be adjusted possibly again affecting accuracy. Esthetically it's a nice rifle but my Toz rifles outperform it.

I too have one and yes it's a touch on the heavy side for its size, might not be suitable for having a youngin shoot it offhand. Accuracy is, as above, not too shabby but it (probably) won't shoot 1 hole groups, granted I shoot cheap ammo anyway and just plink with it so I could care less. Reliability has been fantastic, no misfires though the bolt did kinda jam once (couple thousand rounds through it total). Stripping/cleaning is also quite straightforward and easy but the instructions miss a step when disassembling the bolt.

It does look like a K98 but it's shorter and looks slightly different but it's pretty close. The finish on mine was........well, cheap brown paint that couldn't be stripped with any sort of chemical and was a real pain to sand off. Mine looked nothing like the one on marstar's website if that's important.

Post mortem: Metal strip above triggerguard was rubbing against the trigger so it didn't always go fully forwards. The other side had been filed down over the bluing, so I had put it in upside down. The offset scope isn't bad.

IMHO....(here we go.. )...it would be more meaningful to get a boy an expensive .22 rifle. Something meaningful that he will cherish well into manhood. I'm sorry, but the Norinco rifles are just affordable copycats of some very classic designs. Get him a Marlin, those are affordable if you have to go that way. Just my 2 cents.

I have the Toz-78 and the JW25A. While the Norinco is a pretty good gun and mine is quite accurate, the Toz is a better value in terms of finish, weight, and accuracy. You will need a set of tall see-through rings to scope the Toz (at least that's what I needed), and you may need to do some file-work on the bases of the rings to allow them to tighten properly, as the scope rail is slightly narrower than the standard 3/8".

The rear sight pins can be easily driven out and the complete rear sight slid off. Then you can mount low rings. The rail on mine accepted both burris and weaver rings. Just make sure the rings are for 8mm to 11mm dovetails and you will be fine. I tried the high rings over the rear sight and it sucked, much better with normal height rings.......
I just bought my brother one for x-mas, this one came in a nice birch stock....the first one I got was beech. I really like the birch.......may have to swap before I wrap it up.;)

Yup, this is what Hitzy is talking about ! No rear sight.

True enough, but then you end up with the front sight in the scope image, which bothered me more than the high rings. Good point about the pins, though, Hitzy.

That will only happen with a low powered (4x) scope. On higher power (I have a 3-9x) you don't see it at all.

I've got a JW-25A and I love mine.
The trigger is light(ish) and crisp, I don't mind the weight at all, and its very accurate for a plinker. Scoping it was a PITA though. I ended up using BKL riser blocks so that the bolt handle would clear. I also stripped the dog-doo paint and restained it a dark walnut. I'll post pics later on.
