At our range, we police up our brass as best we can. I was considering a brass catcher for my AR's: anyone recommend a particular model?

Regards,

I have one that only works with carrying handles. It locks into the hole in the carrying handle with a detent ball. Made of plastic, doesn't look real expensive. I'd post a pic but I have no idea who makes it. It was provided to me at work.
For individual use..I think they are great.
However from a training point of view I think they are dangerous.
My reason being..I can't see the chamber of a students weapon with it on and muzzle control goes out the window with most when they try to remove it.
As an instructor..I have to many other things to be concerned with and don't need the added responsibility, worry of 6 or more muzzles pointing everywhere.

You've got a good point there!

You cant see or feel the chamber

There are some that slip on and off a mounting block or clip. So it comes off (like a magazine) when the shooting's done.

E.g.,:

http://www.gunaccessories.com/AR15-M16Parts/BrassCatcher.asp (BC-03EL)
http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/accessories/el-ar-002.asp

My favourite for easy on/off: http://www.jprifles.com/BrassCatcher.html

Also, if your competitor has a safety block in, the gun can't fire anyway.

Would a magazine-style chamber plug clear this concern? If the plug is in, you know the bolt is locked back.
What Kevin is referring to is the ability to check the chamber during unloading drills or during an IA & stoppage.

I had one I used on a previous AR15 I owned which was the E & L Mfg model listed in the Bushmaster link above, it worked great. Like RePete stated above, it only takes a second to put it on or take it off.

In regards to the abilitiy to comfirm that the gun is safe with a brass catcher.

A breach flag can be inserted while a brass catcher is in place(the one in my pic), confirming that no cartridge is in the chamber.

It might need a small extention on the flag portion to protrude from the bag, but it is not a difficult modification.

I believe that a brass catcher is a useful accessory, with multiple benefits, such as;

-keeping ammo from disrupting shooters on your right side
-keeping the shooting range clean from empty brass
-for reloaders, easy to organise your brass
-and the reason I bought mine, it's a pain to pick up brass in the snow!
