I'm with Buck1950 on this. I'd advise looking for a quality used rifle. There are a number of used Husqvarna 1900-actioned rifles for sale at good prices on Intersurplus (and you could also look at the CGN EE), and they'll either be Husqvarna, Carl Gustaf, Viking Arms, or Zoli 1900s--all the very same action and almost identical rifles. In my opinion, any 1900-action rifle would be vastly superior to what you can buy new these days. I don't think any 1900s were chambered in .308 Win., but lots were in 6.5x55, and that's the chambering I'd recommend. Since you're new to shooting, a 6.5x55 will be more pleasant to shoot than a .308, particularly off the bench, and is all the rifle you'll ever need for the vast majority of hunting, with the possible exception of the large bears. There are other quality used rifles out there as well--Husqvarna 1600s, Sakos, for example--but the Husqvarna 1900 is, in my view, the best of all of these.
I stand corrected. You're right, Milt; there were 1900s made in .308. I know that tons were made in 30-06, but had never seen one in .308. The one you spotted on ####### looks very nice. It is in better shape than most of the used ones imported from Europe that I've seen on Intersurplus and looks like a real bargain at $700. Someone is going to get a great deal.I agree with the 1900 suggestion, I think they are a little scarce but I have a 1900 in 308. There is a nice one on ####### right now for $700.
