I would appreciate some first hand information on Holland and Vais muzzle brakes. How effective are they? How noisy are they? How do they look on a barrel? How do they compare in price? Who sells them in Canada? Any other observations?

All things being equal in oversize and length, the Holland style will work much better then the Vais. Anytime a brake allows gases forward, it lowers recoil reduction.

Baffled or fish gill brakes are more effective as the gases push each baffle forward like sail. You use that energy to drive the rifle forward then divert it sideways to eliminate the jet effect.

The Holland style will be louder by virtue of directing more gas to the side. Both are still noisy and proper hearing protection is needed.

Instead of the Holland, I use the Micaluk. Wider, so a bit more effective and way cheaper (PM me if interested as I have one left).

Here is my Micaluk installed on my Savage 7RM. Around 9lbs and I can spot my own shots. Recoil is mild even with hot 162gr loads.

I had a Vais on my .300WM and it felt like a .243.

The great thing is they were able to make it the same diameter as my barrel, and they aren't as loud as most brakes.

Downside, they direct gas out the bottom as well so you get dust and debris kicked up under it.

We can get most brakes but lean towards Holland for inventory - side and top ports keep the dust on the ground and on the bench.. Multiple port brakes can create a real sand/dirt storm pending the surface you are shooting on.

Ofcourse there are those of us who make brakes to suit the client as well, case in point the modified Holland style that Long Range Canucks rifle is sporting. This 1 has a 90 degree front baffle stack and 79 degree rear wall angle to reflect some gas slightly forward to shoot the sound downrange. No lower ports and the side gills are cut to direct gases upwards as well as forward slightly. All this makes for an extremely effective brake that is not nearly as noisy or abusive for the shooter/spotter.
PM me for more details
