opinions in deer hunting with 44-40

I would really appreciate opinions on the viability of white tail deer hunting with a Winchester 44-40.

It's been done for decades why not now. A slightly warm handload should do the trick under 100 yards.

I have done it (my 44-40 is 101yrs old). Killed a black bear with it too. I use factory loads.

I can usually get within 100yds of deer where I hunt so the 44-40 is just fine.

I dont know if its worth scoping a 44-40 tho...Id say its a 100yd type rifle.

I think there is a 101yr old 44-40 on the EE.......? lol

Did it last year with a 200 grain cast bullet at 900 fps. That's considerably slower than the factory load.
Distance was about 15 to 20 feet though.

I know a guy who has used one to drop moose with. He would have it in his canoe as he paddled slowly around the lake.He would sneak up on moose coming to the lake for a drink in the early morning and shoot them in the neck.He would have to shoot them more than once sometimes but he got a moose evey year that he used this method.Stay within the limits of the rifle and place your shot well and you will have deer for dinner.

So long as you stay within the range limitation's it should be ok!
