I've been thinking about picking up a Uberti 71-72 Open Top from Shooter's Choice (38 Special, 7-1/2" barrel, Navy grip). Since I've never handled one of these in person, I'd like the opinion of anyone that has or does own one. How well do they stand up over time? Factory loads OK, or would something loaded a little lower be easier on the open frame? Accuracy? Fit and finish? Any info would be appreciated.

open tops

I have a pair of Uberti 1871 open tops in 45 Schofield, that i purchased three years ago from Shooters choice. They have become my main match guns for Cowboy action shooting . They have never let me down. I shoot only black powder, full load, 27 grains 2FF goex. With the proper lube they function perfectly, no lock ups. They hold and point really well. Although i have six other pairs of Uberti cartridge revolvers, my open tops are my favourites. Uberti fit and finish is excellant, i recommend them.

A friend if mine has a Uberti .38 spl open top w. a 5.5 inch bbl. It's a very nice gun, smooth action and shoots to point of aim. He has shot a fair bit of Winchester factory .38 out of it without a problem, but I would definitely stay away from any of the +P offerings. I have a also dealt with shooter's choice on several items and they have always been good to deal with. Cheers.

Thanks guys. I think you twisted my rubber arm. :D If they still have one in stock at the end of the week, one will be headed my way.

Right on let us know how it works out. I am looking for another Uberti Walker and may end up ordering a new one from Shooter's Choice if I can't find a decent used one.

I figure this will be the first step towards blackpowder for me.
Flash pan blue, what do you use for a holster? I have a right hand buscadero rig home (waiting for Marstar to get some more Pietta 1873s in), and I was thinking about getting a slim jim right hand crossdraw holster to go on the belt. Think it's work OK?

How does the Pietta 1858 Remington stack up to the Uberti in quality and accuracy? Can I get a 5" barreled one in 44? and who besides Marstar carries them as I would rather buy out here in BC
