I'm thinking of picking up a 1911 in 9mm, and I'm wondering what experience anybody has had or recommendations you can make. Some that are currently under consideration are:

- Para 18-9
- STI Trojan
- BUL M-5
- Norinco NP29

Any advice you can offer is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Scott

I have a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm, fantastic little pistol. It is currently designated as my backup gun in IPSC style shooting. If you can find one, buy it!

1911 9mm Fun

All I can say is DON'T buy it.... I'll buy it ! ;)

I have an Imbel/ Springfield in 9mm and it's a fabulous shooter. I cannot hold it steady enough. I love "weeding" the sandy backstop at 30 meters with this pistol.

Most of us ain't carrying, instead we are punching paper so the 9mm 115 bullet is just fine for my wife and I to blast at fig 11's. If I was gonna carry, it would be the .45 Springfield Loaded I just sold to a very lucky CGNutter in Calgary.

Yes, I love the 9mm in a 1911 platform. Very strong and lots of steel around the barrel and slide... can you say "overbuilt"? Lots and lots of parts available for tweaking and having more range fun, that makes the (addiction) hobby more fun !! :D Such parts are gonna be around for a looooong time, especially in light of all the zillions of .45 Cal 1911's running around. Kinda like having the fun of a black rifle but now in a pistol format. If I can find another NP29, I'm gonna stick my neck out for that 1911.

I also love having 9 rounds in the magazine, no double stack necessary. Single stack magazines are plentiful with makers like: Mec Gar, Metalform, Pachmayr, Colt, et al. Piles and piles of them around. I really dislike pistols that are almost impossible to obtain magazines... I guess that's what I deserve for being a competitor with the pistol.

The 9mm is a super inexpensive bullet to shoot and reload. Brass is plentiful. Good Brass, too. Many of my 9mm shooter buddies just throw the brass at me. Am I missing something ? Maybe they are not reloaders, or maybe the 9mm is not worth the time to reload. Works for me... lots of free once fired brass, and Winchester brand, too. :D

Okay, I gotta say something not so good about the 9mm in 1911 platform... Here goes. ...

As many of you know , I'm a Ciener conversion kit lover. These kits only fit the .45 frame primarily because the .45 ejector is over to one side (fat case, of course). The 9mm frame ejector is wider towards the center, so the Ciener slide bumps or conflicts with the fatter ejector. Solution ? Ciener recommends just pushing out the 1/16" ejector pin and then removing the 9mm ejector PERIOD. The Ciener kit comes with its OWN ejector, so when you convert your .45 frame by adding on the Ciener slide, the .45 ejector is redundant and no longer needed. Amazing what you learn when you visit Ciener's site. 3W.22lrconversions.com :)

So using the Ciener kit with a 9mm 1911 frame is a slight PITA. So, I just get around that by purchasing a .45 1911 and dedicate it to the .22 LR. Time to find another Norinco 1911 in a .45 just for the kit. Where's GT ? I know he just adores Kommie pistols. :D Hey, they can be had for $ 349 at 3W.ellwoodepps.com or tweaked for $ 449 through Gunnar at www.armco-guns.com

Now as soon as I win the lottery, I'm running over to Freedom Ventures for an STI Trojan in 9mm. Yeeeha... I think they are running around $ 1100 to $ 1200 or something like that !

So should you buy a 1911 in 9mm ? Nope ! Let me buy it first !

Cheers & bluebird skies,
Barne

9mm on the 1911 platform is for those who can't handle the .45ACP...:p

Seriously, I have a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm [as well as a couple 1911's in .45ACP]. Great ctg on that platform... very easy to shoot. ;)

I have the NP29 and love it! Great 9mm 1911

I was just talking about this very topic with babboybeeson last night at the range. In 5000 rounds (90% lead reloads) no problems. This gun is very comfortable to shoot and is probably more accurate than I can shoot it.
It was affordable. $350.00 from Marstar. For this price, I could afford to buy 6 extra magazines (after market recomended), holster, mag pouches, and Lee re-loading start up kit, plus re-loading supplies, and still be under budget.

By the way, shooting star makes 10 round magazines. I, just use Wilson Combat 10 round conversion kits for my 9 round Mec Gars. And they work great.

On the customizing side. Just because I can't leave well enough alone, not because I have had problems. I have ordered a new beavertail, allum trigger and hammer, and bushing, (thanks Wilwigspal) that are available for pricer 1911's.

I would recomend one to everyone. The price is right. Mine has been a good shooter right out of the box. The fit and finish was pretty good. And the gigantic selection of after market parts available makes it a nice gun to "play" with if you are so inclined.

I used to have an NP29. I loved it... GREAT pistol for the price!

Comes with beavertail grip safety, extended thumb safety, extended slide stop, commander hammer... all for like $350! These 'additional' features alone would cost you more than $200 if you added them to a stock 1911.

However, your price range for your options is quite diverse... $350-$1500+!!!!

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input!

I used to shoot a Kimber in 40, and loved it, but I've been outta pistols for a while and wanted to get back into a 1911 but keep the expenses down.

That being said, seeing as there don't seem to be any new NP29's around, those STI Trojan's are looking pretty nice!

Does anybody have an idea when the slow boat will be arriving and unloading the NP29's at Marstar?

Scott

Mike from Marstar just contacted me about the slowboat from Kommieland. They are expecting 2 shipping containers in 2 months.

Sounds like the typical response to anyquestion in Hong Kong... 2 weeks. Yah, right.....

1 thing to say

a 9mm in 1911. Humm?????? well don't wast your money. The 1911 is a ,45 cal gun. chambered in anything else is a wast of time and money. If you want that pussy 9mm round. go and buy a pussy gun for it, ah like those plastic XD's.

Or a over priced Glock, or maybut you can enjoy that awfull trigger of the HK USP.

Hell the world is full of pussy 9mm so don't get a pussy 1911.

Thank god John Browning left this world, cause he'd be rooling in his grave seeing his masterpice chambered in that pussy round. Hell Why not buy a converted 1911 in .22 then you can really waste your time and money

lol:D ... dude, you had me going there for a second with all that #### you wrote. Then a friend explained "sarcasm" to me again. He said "you know when someone says something so totally moronic to prove the oposite of what they just said?"
Then I got it. You probably couldn't have even typed that with a straight face?

I have the STI Trojan in 9MM and love it. Just sold my Norinco NP 29, decided I didn't want to spend the money to bring it up to full custom. The Nork shot great and in many respects was the equal to the Trojan - accuracy wise for sure. Only problem I ran into with the Trojan was a failure to lock back on the last round and that was corrected by installing a 10# recoil spring. Factory guns come with a 14# spring which is just to heavy for the slide calibercombination IMHO.

Interested in the 10 rd conversion kits from Wilson as the only knock I have with the Trojan are the 9 round mags. Why nobody makes a 10 rd mag is beyond me.

Take care

someones trolling..............

Considering the fact that real world data from police shootings show that 9mm is at least as effective if not more so than .45 with modern hollow points, I would think that a 1911 in 9mm would make good sense. You get a proven platform thats easy to shoot accuratly, probably the best handgun trigger going, and access to more aftermarket hop ups then the next three most popular handguns combined. Personally I really like .45, however unless your stuck shooting nothing but hardball (see military useage only) you aren't giving up anything anymore. Oh, there is a small advantage to bullseye shooters, bigger hole cuts more rings on close hits. We won't even enter the disscusion that most glock frames will outlast a steel one with less maintainance. Gotta love people airing their bias/predjudice.

The first 1911 pistols where .38 colt automatic, not .45, ballistically not quite a 9mm. The army wanted .45 to stop horses. Since the .38 auto (not super) is about a 9 or a bit less even I doubt that JMB is spinning all that much. He's probably wondering why your still shooting a 1911 when the hi-power is out there....no grip saftey (the cavalry wanted that), higher mag capacity to boot.:D
