Hi Guys,

I am thinking of doing some precision shooting. Perhaps join the DCRA. I know this question will likely open a can of worms but here goes...

What do you recomend for a starting calibre or what in your opinion is the best long range calibre. I had been thinking of going for a 6.5swede and do a little reloading. But after conversing with some lads they suggested something like the 223 or 243 etc. The paris gun show is comming up and if i can find a deal then it's on.

Let me know what ya think; looking for the benfit of experience.

Thanks,
Da Pipe

As a starting calibre anything in the 6-6.5mm or even a .308 win will work till you figure out what you want.
Going out on a limb I would suggest a 6.5-284 as a great LR calibre. There are many other great calibres out there in the 6-6.5 range but none of them have won as many matches as the 6.5-284.

Having said this I think the future of LR shooting is going in the 7mm direction and my next build will be a 7WSM.

Im thinking of target shooting out as far as possible. Maybe a little varminting with it aswell. Im not sure what divisions are available for competition shooting. Im not thinking of using this for any medium game or anything like that.

223 is a good starting point for long range and varminting, i am not a pro in fact this season will hopefully be my first foray into the long range competition world and i will be bringing a .300WM to the line. defintly not a varmint calibre but if if you can handle the recoil and cost associated with shooting it, it will defintly get you way out there. have you decided on what glass to get ?

As stated the 6.5-284 is a good cartridge and savage has a new this year
12f class rifle that will sell for just over 1k.

Yep, what he says.

I also love the 6.5 Swede but by all accounts the Savage is as close to a custom f-class gun as you will find in a factory gun. I can hardly wait to see what these rifles do in competent hands.

Something to keep in mind....
Target rifle is a .308 or .223 caliber rifle. Fired unsupported in the prone postions. By unsupported that means the shooter holds the rifle and fires without the aid of a rest or sandbags. Jacket, glove and sling is allowed.
There are bullet weight restrictions and overall rifle weight.
F Class there are 3 seperate classes.
F(F) caliber and bullet restriction, .308 and .223 only.
F(O) open, class caliber limited to the range. 20 KG weight limit IIRC.
F(M) off the shelf rifle, very few mods, any factory offered caliber within the range limits.
For a full list of rules see the DCRA web page.

For what you want to do,
- long range target shooting
- varminting
- medium sized game
..the .243 would do you good.
