I'd feel almost guilty firing an ex-service Garand, and have been looking at the Springfield Armory (the commercial one, not U.S. Govt) posts for Garands.

My understanding is that the M1A's are well regarded, if pricy.

But what about their M1 Garands? I know there are differences in the receivers, etc, but are they regarded as well made?

Thanks in advance for comments.

I had one that I got rid of. I was shocked at the sticker price when I purchased it but to be truthful it was the best rifle I ever owned. The quality was out of this world and the accuracy was unbelievable.
It went to a good home.
If you can get one and you are only going to buy one Garand make it this one.
Cheers

i see them posted for 1300-1600 in the for sale forums here, but there aren't a lot.

a few of the dealers at the top of the page seem to be selling springfield armory- Ellwood Epps, f.instance. springfield doesn't build the garand anymore, as far as i can tell.

A friend in the US has one which I've examined and shot. It shows good fit, finish and functionality, but it cost considerably more than the real thing.

Receivers on these are cast, not forged like the military rifles. While a cast receiver is not as strong as a forged one,I have not seen reports of any failures with them. These rifles must still meet proof standards. Indeed, many commercial bolt guns, which are chambered for the same .30-06 cartridge, also employ cast receivers and work safely and well.

Authentic GI Garands can still be found in good condition and at a lesser cost,so I see no real advantage in going with the commercial product.

What purple said.... The real M1's are selling for cheaper that the commercial cast receiver'ed M1 from Sproingfield INC. You just gotta have the jones for the cast receiver and maybe a rifle that has never been pointed at others in conflict(s). WTF do I know?

I have seen and played with the commercial versions at EPPS many moons ago, and I liked the fit and finish. It's a wonderful reproduction with some USGI parts AND it's fantastic to sit and watch "Saving Ryan's Privates" or "Band of Brothers" with.

i think 'band of brothers' is what did it for me. my dad had been a paratroop with the 1st polish brigade. years ago i bought him 'bridge too far' on vhs, then more recently, ' b of b' on dvd. after he died, i got the dvds back and watched them myself. i couldn't help but be moved, thining that he went through a lot of what was depicted in the film.

and so, seeing as how i inherited a lee enfield from my uncle (born in 1917, so was his lee enfield), i seem to have started to think about getting a garand. toyed with the norinco m14 idea, but a garand or clone wold have a bit more meaning to me.

thanks to all for their posts!

I bought one a year ago and love it, SUPER accurate at 200 yards with a National Match front sight. They go for around $1,750.00 NIB if you can find one, one the EE you can pic one up for around $1,400.00. I had mine up because I really needed cash, but its so beautfull, I might keep it. It has a beautiful americal walnut stock, brand new barrel, receiver, and USGI parts. I installed a McCann adjustable gas system, and national match front sight for pin-point accuracy. A true battle rifle, the .30-06 Sprng is a force to be messed with, I love the 8-round clip too, 10 clips on hand...super fire-power :)
