Even on 1x, it is still looking through a scope. So proper eye position is required, but its alot more lenient than the 4x setting.
The magnification mechanism is very well positioned, easy to get to and use, but protected under the optic. Never heard of anyone breaking one.
As far as value is concerned, its about the most expensive way to get 1/4x (not to be confused with 1-4x), but in my opinion there isn't a better set up if you value high quality, rugged reliability, compact footprint, no reliance on battery but battery enhanced, and minimal optical surfaces to maintain (2 vs the 4 of a red dot and magnifier combo sports).
