Looking for opinions on the Elcan Spectre DR 1/4. Does the 1x behave like a "red dot" or do you need to maintain proper eye relief/head position? Is the mechanism to switch from 1 to 4 durable, or have people experienced breakage? Is it good value over a fixed 4x like the os4x, or a red dot/magnifier combo?

Sold mine for a Trijicon 1-8x and never missed it.
I looked through both scopes and the Elcan was noticeably dimmer, due to the use of dual prisms cutting light transmissions down.

Even on 1x, it is still looking through a scope. So proper eye position is required, but its alot more lenient than the 4x setting.
The magnification mechanism is very well positioned, easy to get to and use, but protected under the optic. Never heard of anyone breaking one.
As far as value is concerned, its about the most expensive way to get 1/4x (not to be confused with 1-4x), but in my opinion there isn't a better set up if you value high quality, rugged reliability, compact footprint, no reliance on battery but battery enhanced, and minimal optical surfaces to maintain (2 vs the 4 of a red dot and magnifier combo sports).

Well, I bought the DR and I am thrilled. I took it to the range today and shot at 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards. I didn't really believe the hype about the clarity, but holy man it was clear. It made shooting at 200 a different game.
I have owned a trijicon ta31ch. I find the Elcan to be more clear with better eye relief. The illumination of the centre dot is perfect in bright sunlight, and it really lends itself well to both eyes open shooting at 1x.

Bear in mind, the 1X lens set is parallax adjusted for 35m and less, while the 4X lens sets are parallax adjusted for more than 65m.
Using the 1X at long range is not ideal.
Using the 4X at close range is not ideal.
When I had my DR tested on an optical bench, the POI shift between 1X and 4X was measured at less than 1/4 MOA.
That's pretty darn good. Zero with the 4X, and the 1X will be damn close...and at 25m, that 1/4MOA shift adds up to a grand total of 1/16"....like, a thick line from a marker tip.
I'm delighted with mine, will not sell it anytime soon.
