Opinions on Grand Slam's

I'd like to hear opinions on Speer Grand Slam's good or bad.I just loaded some up for my 7mm Rem.Mag (160 grs.) and they group nice but i've never actually taken a deer with one and wanted to know what their performance is like. Thanks.
 
That's a bit heavy for deer, I think 140gr would be better, but 160 grand slam would put just about anything down in a hurry. If they group good leave it alone. Grand slam bullets are pretty cheap to, I mean in price not performance
 
Shot a couple of deer with 165gr. in my 3006 AI. Excellent performance, now have them loaded in my 7MM STW in a 160 gr. for moose. Just need to get out and find a voulenteer for ballistic testing....

I have used GS's for years....Work great...shot them out of 308,300WM,30/06

Here's one recovered from an elk....Rifle was a Browning BLR in 308....Bullet 150gr.

Have used Grand Slams on two elk. Recovered one bullet from a mature bull that was embedded in his hide after travelling through the vitals. Great performance. :)
 
Thanks guys i appreciate the reply's.I used to use partitions and don't get me wrong their a great bullet and have proven themselves over and over but the last 3 bucks i shot they didn't seem to open up a lot.All 3 ran approx.100 yds.before going down and i didn't lose any but was surprised i never anchored them in their tracks .My approx.range from the 3 was about 50 to 75 yds.(i always still hunt the same spot thats why i know the distance).I was using my .270 on all 3 thats why i'am switching to the 7mm RM. and before anyone attacks me i'am not bad mouthing the .270 but the big 7 does hit harder.
 
Personally I really like Speer GS bullets in any calibre that they make them for. About 3 years back the metallurgy in the jackets was changed slightly, it didn't effect the expansion or retention of material at all, but it did slightly effect accuracy. I found that with new bullets I had to cut back 2 grains of W760 in the 7x57x160Speer GSxCCI250 to get satisfactory groupings. By the way, the 7mm Rem Mag really shines with heavier bullets such as the 160 grain offerings and doesn't shine as well with lighter bullets. bearhunter
 
We have had great success with them, the only core I lost was after the bullet went though the head of the forkhorn, burying in the tree right behind it! Picture perfect mushrooms at all ranges from 40yards to 200 in:

243: 100gr
270: 130gr
7x57: 145gr
308, 30-06: 165, 180gr
338-06, 338 Win Mag: 225, 250gr
375H&H 285gr.

I guess you could say I like them too!
Only down side is their low B.C. but for most hunting applications hitting game within the 200 yards, most about 80 yards, you'd never know the difference.
Their "mag tip" nose doesn't deform under recoil in the mag like a Partition.

The worst meat loss from bloodshot I have ever seen was from a GS out of a 30-06.

80yds shot, no major bone hit, lost probably 35% of that whitetail.


This was about 12years ago so generation of GS bullet it was I dont know.
 
i have used them succesfuly in the past but i think they rate between a standard cup/core bullet and a premium. the bonded, barnes and even partitions are better. gs's are priced in between standard and premiums and are probably fine in standard weights. i wouldn't use them in a light for calibre load.
