Looking at a Remington Model 7 in a 6mm , the price the guy wants is 595. Gun is in excellent shape. Just curious what you guys think a fair price would be for this rifle. I do realize it's hard to say sight unseen. But pretend you've looked at it, and it's in near new condition :)

is it stainless or blued, synthetic, walnut or laminated stock. last 7 i bought was stainless synthetic stock very good condition with rings and bases for 550.

If it's a 6mm it's probably the older blued rifle with an 18-1/2" barrel and in excellent condition it sounds like a good price. I owned one years ago in .223 and liked it much better than the stainless .243 I owned afterwards.

The 6mm is not as common a round as the .243 but if you reload it can be a better peformer.

I've had a couple... still have one in .223 Rem... it started out with a factory 18 1/2" 'carbine' barrel. I had that barrel swapped out for a Rem 700 factory 24" barrel in .223... love the way it shoots now.

$525-$550 would be a better price. Even though its a Model 7, the resale value of Remington bolt guns has fallen considerably with the advent of the SPS line, including the Model 7.

I love my .223...it was great for a first centerfire for my son...sadly it sits collecting dust in the safe...the .223 calibre is of no use where I live.....I would love to find one in 243

Sounds like people like the model. I have read great things about the model 7, just don't want to pay too much. Remington's site shows it's still in production, and it started in 1983. But at whole sale it's about 750 for a 243, and if I go to a model 7 youth i can get the 260 remington for about 560. So it's kind of "is it kind of" worth the extra bucks for te 6mm , since i will be doing handloads and the rifle will maybe be better made , or I could be waisting my money.

Actually just noticed the 6mm only ran for 1 yr in the model 7 , so it ceased production in 1984. Is there any difference between the model 7 and the model 788. I was looking at a rifle in that model as well.

that's pretty slick! Looks like my 700 but a miniature version. :D

But I thought at barrels of that length you started to noticeably lose velocity?

you can't even say Model Seven and 788 in the same sentence....

I had one of the early 7's in 6mm,.....and in 223 and 7-08......nice guns but not worth that much IMHO.....an 18-1/2" 6mm has a lot of bark for the bite...best thing for an 18-1/2" M7 is a 22" 700 barrel.....

I wouldnt hesitate picking up a Model Seven. They are handy rifles that shoot real good too. Great hunting rifles

The 788 was the model 710 of it's day. Brought into the market to drive out the lower end rifles of Remington's competition, which it did. Ugly, clunky, and heavy the only good thing about it was that it was fairly accurate , again just like the 710.

Who knows maybe in 30 years there will be a cult following of the "Old 710" :puke:

Nicest gun to hunt with I have ever owned Rem model 7, 18 1/2" Baarrel in 308win, with 1.75 to6x Leupold with a Premier dot, 6lbs 4oz all in, under 3/4" at 100

Awesome little gun.It would be even better if they made a LH version. My wife has one in 7mm-08.It is a great gun to carry afield all day.Quick shouldering,
nice and light has enough power to do what it is suppose too. What more could you ask for.

shorter rear action bridge, older ones only had one rear base screw hole so 1 piece mounts were the only option, new ones have 2 and can accomodate 2 pc bases. bolt shroud is alot smaller than a 700, the bolt body is a bit shorter too.

to add to what tod said.....the mag box is the same length as a short 700 action,...there are two piece Weaver bases for the one screw rear bridge model...the bolt shroud/plug is not smaller...actually they are longer and shaped differently with a super ugly taper and a flat on the side to clear the safety lever, they are very similiar to the old 600/660 bolt plug., I modified most of the ones I owned by removing the taper and shortening them to the 700 length. The bolt body is shorter and the front lug section is all 700. Barrels from a 700 will fit also.
