I've never had a chance to handle any of the various refurb SIGs that have made their way to the Canadian retail market over the past couple of years. I bought mine new, but I have a buddy who is looking to pick up his first restricted firearm and is possibly interested in a SIG.

Although on a budget, he really wants a SIG and so I suggested looking into picking up one of those factory refurbished models that were carried more than they were shot.

I introduced him to handgun shooting this past spring and let him try just about everything in my collection, from a Ruger MK II & S&W 617 rimfires to 1911s, Glocks & the SIG P226. He's shot my rimfire .22s enough that he can handle 9mm okay and the P226 was the pistol that he liked best, probably because it was the best fit for his hand's ergonomics. He's developing into a decent marksman with mine. He already has his restricted endorsement, so now it's time for him to buy his own.

Any input or opinion on the refurbs, including what to look for, price range, best place to buy etc... much appreciated. I hope any who reply will forgive me if I don't reply immediately. I'm currently using a friend's computer, as mine is on the fritz. Thx! :)

If the firearm in question is an actual factory refurbished gun , you will not have any problems.....issues arise when some police surplus firearms are sold back into use without being refurbished or checked by a gunsmith.....there was a reason that many of these firearms were taken out of service....

I got mine from IRunGuns, pretty sure the internet told me it was made in Germany in 1990/1991 from the serial number. It was imacculate when I got it. I don't know what condition it was in, or what department it came from, but when I unboxed it I could not tell that it had been used at all, let alone over 20 years old.

Then I scratched it five minutes later

I own a police refurb Sig 226 in 9mm and it is nothing short of excellent. Aside from minor holster wear it was in excellent condition, and it is 2,500 rounds deep into its service life with me and I have not experienced one failure yet. It is functionally flawless and more accurate than I am. I would recommend it to anyone on a budget.

I got mine for $800 shipped on the EE with a holster, 5 magazines, and 3 dual magazine holsters. German-made model. I feel like I got a pretty good deal.

Alternatively, it is very economical to buy a SIG 226 classic and then buy a 9mm, .40 or .357SIG x-change kit. All in he'll have the .22 slide & barrel and the centre-fire calibre of his choice kit for the price of a new centre-fire SIG off the shelf.

Since he's just getting started, buying a .22 handgun first that can be upgraded later is a great choice. If he loves the 226 platform, that's one way to go. One frame 2 slide assemblies. Or he could later buy a complete gun in centre-fire and retain his muscle memory for all the controls, trigger pull, grip and save money on holsters.

I bought a factory refurb 226 from Wolverine a couple of years ago. It looked to have been refinished and appeared to have a new barrel. If they had sold them as new guns I would not have known the difference. They were $800 at the time when new Sigs were going for about $1200 so they were a great deal at the time.

I just picked up a German refurb 226 from my local range for $749, some holster wear and two mm sized nicks on the trigger guard and slide. Inside the wear marks show it's been fired some but it shoots good, better than me:redface: as my ex-CF buddy had no problem getting a tight group right off the bat.

I'd say, all in all I'd buy another refurb. I'm happy.
