Opinions on S&W Target revolvers?

i know this is a noobie question, but just read a comment NOT to fire an S&W wheelgun single action, said to be bad for the sear.

true? more details please...

Never heard that one before. If that was even remotely correct you wouldn't be see'n target hammers on S&W revolvers.

I don't believe that. Jerry Kuhnhausen's S&W revolver shop manual makes no mention of any such thing. My wheelguns have seen quite a few rounds fired from both double and single action without ill effect.

He's referring to tuned S&W revolvers - essentially PPC 1500 guns, most of which don't have a hammer spur, but some of which DO have a full #### notch. My rule of thumb is if it has a spur you can use it, if not (like my PPC revolver) don't. I'd cry if someone damaged the trigger on that gun, it's pretty close to being as good as ###

The K22 and K38 Masterpiece are the two S&W target revolvers that I will never part with in my collection.

post #20 in this link makes the comment:

i don't know enough about it, but your comment about the hammers logically makes sense.

nntw; I clicked your link and it's all about self-loaders, not revolvers??

FYI, S&W revolvers are designed to shoot either double or single action. The pre M17's came with fish hook hammers, designed for target shooting single action, if you choose. Later models came out with the wide target hammers.

Quite often, the first shot is S/A and the next 5 are D/A. Dealer's choice.

Here's a 1947 K-22 Target Masterpiece with a "Fish Hook Hammer"

thanks for the comments. i know that the s&w comment was posted in a 1911 thread, but as i say, i'd never heard of such a thing before.

where in the toronto area is a gunsmith recommended for reviewing s&w revolvers? thanks!

Re the S&W hammer and sear relationship. During a "double-action" (trigger pull) the sear NEVER contacts the hammer's sear notch, only the "fly" on the hammer is lifted by the trigger lever caming surface. The sear notch is completely bypassed. Anyone who shoots NRA bullseye with a revolver does it single action, though the Canadian champion has been known to fire the remaining 4 in a rapidfire string as double-action.
And for those contending that it is damaging to a 1911 to drop the slide, it is done by most target shooters on a regular basis - come on guys the metal is hardened! No damage results unless you do it a million times or so!
