Im thinking about picking up the Savage 93F 17 HMR, stainless match barrel, black synthetic stock. Comes with factory mounts for a scope. Im looking at it as as cost effective way to get my feet wet with using a scope and shooting long range.
Anyone have any input on this rifle or an alternative cost effective idea on what to get.

I have the thumbhole version of this rifle.

It shoots well out of the box, but is subject to the usual 17 HMR variables like wind and rain. I have shot to minute of milk jug at 275 yards, clay pigeons at 220 and 1" at 100 - sometime less.

For the price it is a great value compared to centerfire .223, or smaller. Different beast I know, but for punchin paper, this is still hard to beat for 100-200 yard accuracy.

Scope is a Nikon buckmaster.

I bought the 93R17 BV last spring. I really like the laminate stock, fits good and looks great. Its the same color as Lionhill's but not the thumbhole config. I really recomend spending a bit more and getting one with the laminate. Sure they all will shoot great but its nice to have a good stock right off the bat. Cant go wrong with a Savage!

I'm unhappy with mine, but only because I feel it's too windy in these parts for the little .17. We have 20-30 km/hr winds blowing on the calm days. :(

I had a BVSS in 17. The synthetic stock is so ugly it'll make you cry
But it's accurate.
I sold it for a few reasons: the 22 mag has more punch and seems to drift less, and ammo's much cheaper. Also I can shoot reloads through my Hornet for about the same price as hmr ammo

Not going to do too much long range shooting with a rimfire......:)

I would probably go with the laminate stock. The synthetic stock on these guns are preatty junky.

Other than that however I would not hestitate to buy a Savage 17HMR (don't know if I would say the same about their other rimfires through). Good accuracy and the accutrigger/thumbhole stock is very nice!

Lionhill is 100% right. I have the same rifle, excellent on gophers out to 200y. Plus it's great for learning LD, you get the same effects at about 200y as a .223 would at 500+. Going to upgrade my scope this year I think.
