I am looking at getting into some longer distance shooting and looking to get a dedicated rifle. I don’t have a huge budget, but I did find a deal on a Savage Axis 2 Precision chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor.

It works for me as my hunting rifle is the same calibre and I already have the dies for reloading.

But what are the thoughts on the Savage? Is it a good gun at $1200 new?

While I'm not familiar with the axis 2 precision variant, I always found the mags kinda chintzy on the axis platform, but the gun itself is an ok budget gun. For 1200 I'd look for a used Remington 700 in the same caliber, but that's just me.

How long is long distance for you? Why not get better at shooting your current rifle further? Up your range game? The rifle probably shoots just fine, does it come with a scope? You could spend $1200 on a scope easily nevermind the rifle. Random thoughts after I got home from shooting my rifles today. I always think I need a “long range rifle” but my rifles will shoot “long Range” all day if I have proper loads and quality glass on it. Not to mention everytime I think my rifle isn’t capable of good groups a better shooter gets behind it and proves me wrong..

You can have two identical Savage precision rifles shooting the same factory ammo - one will print MOA groups all day the other will not. If your going to step up to the plate and play Savage Rifle Roulette. Sometimes you win other times you learn.

I would personally inspect the riffiling if possible before laying out 12 bones

Personally I found my Axis II Precision (that I've since sold) underwhelming. The bolt throw was not as crisp as I expected and even with OK ammo, it didn't group as well as I expected (maybe my expectations were wrong). The one advantage I found was that you can run any AICS magazine on it and the magazines (at that time) were somewhat affordable.

After I sold the Axis II Precision and picked up a Tikka T3x TACT A1 (despite the exorbitant magazine costs), I haven't looked back.
