OK, so I have a couple of ARs, and rather than continue to buy complete rifles, I'm thinking of going the upper route. I love the whole modular thing with being able to mix and match - it appeals to me for all kinds of reasons. I'm thinking of a shorter barrel - 7-12 inches, but geezus, can't find much that isn't the same cost as a complete rifle (almost). Also might like to have something with a longer barrel (20" stainless) but same thing, whatever is available seems dam near the price of a complete rifle with the same specs. I'd like to keep the budget around $1000 for the ~10" - is this even possible? Looking to put onto either a dpms or DD lower.

Am I trying to find unobtaineum?

Try Wolverine...if I remember correctly, they have complete Daniel Defense MK18 uppers for around $1100. It's gonna be a bit more over you $1k with the taxes and shipping (if necessary), but as far as a good, brand new upper goes, you're pretty much not gonna get better quality right out of the box than DD for your money. Just my 2 cents...

Lots of parts sources out there. I recently put together a mk18 sbr upper build with parts from wolverine, red deer shooting centre and Saskatoon gunworks. Came out less than 1k with top parts. DD upper and barrel. Rail prices are also decent if you shop around. Ctc supplies and arms East have good selection in stock.

Check out the AERO M4E, and COP uppers. They are actually well suited to your price point. The COP you would need to use a bolt carrier from another rifle to stay under 1k.
