I figure this is the best forum to get opinions related to Ross rifles.

I've got a new stock for a factory sporter, and I need to sand it and apply some sort of finish. What is the preferred method? Or what was the original method of finishing? The stock is cut from black walnut and is pretty basic as far as visible grain.

I was thinking of using linseed or tung oil, but I'm not sure if one is better or preferred over the other for an application such as this?

Canadian, British and American military stocks were originally finished with raw linseed oil. The US switched to pure tung oil for ww2 production. Either raw linseed or pure tung oil will replicate an original military finish. The key to success is successive applications with the oil applied and rubbed into the wood. Wipe the surface clean about 10- 15 mins after application. The idea is to have the oil dry within the wood, not on top of it. 3 applications will usually suffice. You don't want the oil to accumulate and dry on the surface.
