I'm doing some research for a "bells and whistles" standard gun, and I was talking to someone about SVI. They were saying that the SVI "off the shelf" is not as good an a custom/tuned one based on the STI frame/parts.

what do people think/know of the SVI? how good are they straight from the factory?

Thanks.

any new gun will take some minor tweaking and break in....

FWIW, for the $ i would get a stock Edge and get it tuned with extra mags.

Be prepare to wait if you decide to go the SV route.

FWIW I love my SVI, it was custom ordered via GunBuilder but has been further tweaked by my smiths to suit my shooting.

Peoples buying that caliber of pistol will always want there trigger set a special way......perhaps shield amby's ect.....by there gunsmith ;)

It's custom FACTORY is not custom by my gunsmith....go with the Edge then tweak to your need's

"off the shelf" vs "custom tuned"

That said SVI is supposed to have a SLIGHT advantage in parts/materials quality... Note the emphasis on the slight.

Probably not worth the premium unless you want a configuration you can't get any other place (for less money).

I think an STI is more than adequate starting point.

Quality of the components:

My Standard gun is cutom built on an SVI frame...
My Open Gun is custom built on an STI frame...

When it comes to quality...you're comparing apples to apples...

From the Factory:

The fit and finish on a gun coming out of the SVI Factory (and these are basically custom built) is slightly better than the same gun coming from STI...but more expensive...

STI is a true Factory Built gun...and a damn good one. Calling an SVI a "factory built" gun is a bit of a stretch...

Custom Built

If you custom build the gun...STI or SVI...they will cost about the same...and the quality will be the same...

One the other guys on my squad bought a Brazos (Pro SC Limited) and I like the feel (so thats what I'm comparing it too). when I compare the two it's about a $300 difference between the two, and I'm trying to figure out if the Brazos (with about another $200-300 added on top) with the "break in" that you get, is comparable to an SVI built from the "Factory" and no break in/tuning etc.

If you really want a true custom bells and whistles std gun and want to compare to the brazo's gun .Check out bedell custom gun on shooters connection. Chuck and Dan are great guys to deal with. You get a true custom gun for a lot less money then you a brazo's gun. Just my advice but i am a little by-us I have a bedell gun that I will never let go off:) :) .

If you want a very good gun, get the Edge.

If you want the best, get the Brazos or the Bedell. But the Bedell will take about 5 or 6 months right now if you deal direct. I know Dan very well as a friend, and he makes great stuff.

If you have to ask the question, then the Edge is more than good enough. We are splitting hairs when it comes to this quality. The Edge is much better than most shooters ever hope to be.

The SVI and STI frame share the 2011 concept. Both are really good gun out of the box that do not need tuning. The SVI offer more options and cost also close to a 1000$ more. It is popular in the USA to get the mags tuned by changing the spring and follower to get a round or two more than standard capacity. This is irrelevant in Canada with our 10 rounds limit. I had two Edge so far, a .40 and still got the .45. Both performed out of the box. They are build tight and need proper lubing and break in. Tuning might smooth thing out and reduce the breaking time. More than that, I do not believe this is necessary on a factory STI or SVI.

The SVI is one step up the STI because of the options and configurations offered, and are priced accordingly.

If you are buying a 2011 for competition, you should know how to tune, maintain and improve them to perform.

You cannot go wrong with one or the other. The STI is easier to get and most model are stocked in Canada by Freedom Venture.

gotta take umbrage with that statement, cuz in Production Div. I'd say it ain't so.

About 5 lbs, tuned that way to avoid any potential legal issues in the lawsuit happy US of A.

Easily changed... Although personally if you're seriously thinking about an Edge I'd consider Gunnar's Armco "enhanced edge"... Its only a bit more than the off the shelf model and comes with lots of "extra" little things, like a proper trigger pull.

If we can get together at a match (I'm due to get my cast off this week.) I can let you try a couple of my pistols and you can see which you like better. My Edge is a hard chromed stock model except for the trigger work I did to it.

yes it means what I think it means, (I was being slightly sarcastic by claiming to be insulted or finding your post rude)

You guys and "fancy" words.

Everyone knows an "umbrage" describes the area underneath an umbrella:rolleyes:

STI pays you to shoot their guns SVI doesn't. The contingency program is the smartest thing STI has ever done. You shoot an STI frame and wear a STI shirt at a major match and win your class you get $350-$500 towards STI goods. If you want a custum built gun then look at getting an STI framed gun built by Bedell, Millenium, Hardy or Brazos. There is no difference in the frame quality, some of SV's components are of a higher quality but as long as the frame is made by STI you can sign up for the program.

a few guys were telling me abt this last week, is this with USPSA and the states only? how abt canada? does STI have sponsored shooters / team?
