I'm looking for a side saddle for my Maverick 88 shotgun. i'm debating between a Tac Star side saddle or one of the detachable side saddles offered by S&J Hardware. I've heard good things about the detachable one, but i'm wondering if going with a plastic/polymer attached sidesaddle would be a better bet. any suggestions?

I've got Tac Star SideSaddles on 4 of my 6 870's (the other 2 have Mesa's) on both of my Mossbergs and on my Remington 58 (cut to 19", only works with 3" but man does it sling some lead with 15 pellet 00 Buckshot). I've had all of them since they were the only game in town for gun-mounted ammo holders...

The small screws that hold the polymer shellholder to the aluminum backer plate MUST be loctited in or you will at some point find it dangling by the one remaining screw - how they all manage to disappear so spontaneously I have absolutely no idea.

Aside from the above-noted, no real issues...

I like mine, it was $30. I dont rough it up too much and it has held up fine.

I am however considering a few of the detachable nylon ones as well

What Mudgunner said x2!.

I have the tacstar on my 590A1 SPX and it works very well for it's price. My beef is that it is abit bulky.

The S&J elastic ones are cheaper, lighter, hold the shells better and don't throw the balance of the shotgun off, did I mention cheaper? :)

I'll be testing the elastic one at the next 3 gun event here.

i've beat the living crap out of one. place 1 shell in every second slot with brass facing down (the shells are not held in nearly as tight) and ran 25 rounds of 000 buck through it. no shell fell out. 125 rounds of bird shot yielded the same result.

never had it loosen or interfere with operation.

Thanks for the info guys. I think i'm gonna go with the detachable shell holder for now since it's a bit cheaper and since the gun i'm putting it on isn't a designated "tacticool" only gun. :D

They seem to work fine and are durable. I put them on lots of my own shotties. Ive found that I can feed shells faster & easier off a 25 round belt though.

Side saddles are fine and are damn handy at keeping some extra rounds on the gun but if they are left loaded for any length of time they tend to stretch out and not hold shells as well as a messa.
