Ok, I was trying to decide wether to go .270 or .308 for my wife's deer/ black bear gun and someone suggested 7mm-08 for low recoil and hard hitting.

Now let's face it, this will likely be 25% hers and 75% mine.

Anyway, I have read some info on it and I am now looking for opinions on the caliber.

And If I do go with the 7mm-08 anyone have some brass kicking around they would like to sell? (or bullets or dies or a gun...etc)

7mm-08

We got one for my wife, it is a Ruger compact LSS, She really likes shooting it. She has shot any game with it yet but I'm sure there will not be any problems. It is a very accurate little gun with 140 gr. Rem and Nosler ammo. It is sighted in a 1" high @ 100 yds and hits 2" low @ 200 yds.

I'm sold on the 7mm-08. I traded for my first a S/S m700 a few years ago here on CGN. Since then I added 2 m700 bdls in walnut. One I sold.

I didnt have a chance to hunt with it last year but this year I bagged 1 bear and 2 whitetails. Really couldnt be happier with the performance. I was shooting a 140g partion nosler on all accounts.

I'm a recoil wuss and this thing is the ticket for knock down power in a mild recoiling rig. The only others I would consider in this class would be the 6.5x55 or .260rem.

Brass is readilly available or just make some from .308. I bought some Winchester brass at epps's for under $20 per 100. Cant go wrong with that.

a cartridge that kills game like lightning for your wife or girlfriend will kill just as well in the manliest mans hands, just in case all you 300 Magnum lovers out there didnt know :D

7-08 is a nice lil cartridge but IMO doesnt do things as well as the 260 Remington. ;)

7mm-08...

But then one has a reasonable chance of finding some 7mm-08 on the shelves of the local gun shop for something less than a king's ransom... not so the .260... But that don't matter a schmick to you as you roll your own. But for everyone who doesn't... the 7mm-08 makes more sense.

And the game won't even know the difference... I promise. ;)

Doesn't matter much here (we have no deer/moose etc on PEI) so really all I can find locally is 30-30, .308, .270, 30-06... you know the regulars.
After looking through SIR, Wholesale etc, there doesn't seem to be alot of offering in 7mm-08. I do hope this ammo sticks around for years.

I know a BIG man with a lot of years hunting and a pile of rifles in his many gun safes. We were talking about a huge moose he'd shot and had mounted and I asked him what he shot it with. He kind of blushed and said he had bought a Rem. model 7 in 7mm08 a few years back for his wife and son to hunt with. But he liked shooting it so much that he had been hunting pretty well exclusively with it for some years.

I have a Rem. 788 in .243 that I got for my kids to hunt with but I think I better get them a 7mm08 to graduate up to. ( I've been looking at the Kimber model 84M )

I was ready to order my 7mm-08 but the local gun shop sold me a 270 today made me a decent cash sale offer (still more than mailorder but sI have dies for .270. ammo is cheaper and it is supporting a local business). I can probably work on some milder loads for it. in the meantime, I will try it out with some factory 130 gr.

You definately have to let me know how it shoots!!!
will do... it is of course a Stevens 200, same as what you are considering, it will likely be a while before I get to shoot it, I just took the stock off, sanded all the seams on it (one of the shortcuts to make this guns so affordable) and cut it to length, now I need to figure out how to get the new pad to fit, the screw holes won't line up.
