Hello:

Would like to know if this is a sound pistol to purchase from anyone who has had experience with them. i.e. if they are reliable and trouble free.

I'm deciding to either get this above pistol or a Sig P226 or CZ SP-01 Shadow Line 9mm.

If anyone can give an opinion, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Thanks,

I've shot a buddy's M40-A1 several times. Odd design, but fits nicely in the hand. Weird sights, but those can be swapped for 3-dots.
Lots of safeties, seems like the same basic design as a Glock? The only part I don't like is the big gap between slide and frame (see-through).
However...my P226 MK25 cost me $1200, and SFRC has the L9 and the M40 for $650 and $550 respectively right now:

Finding a holster might be tough...but you could do worse.

needs to be worked in. recoil spring is WAY too strong....leave the slide locked back to work it in. mag well opening sucks...and mags will not drop free unleds you really press down hard on the mag release....or u can modify it by using a round hobby file at the rear of the inside if the mag release. shoots very flat...rrset is good. trigger is good but needs to be fired. This gun has potential....that mag well is as bad as an hk usp. front sight is red....which sucks. i would replace if i could find one.

I believe I have my answer with your comment and further research: NO STEYR! I believe I'll go with something I can trust: Sig P226.

Thanks.

Galleon, the steyr is likely one of the most naturally point pistols I and many others have ever fired. It's a great little pistol that points effortlessly and allows for easy accurate shooting. The sights although not typically are incredibly easy to get used to and again help the shooter to hit the target with ease.

There is nothing wrong with the pistol.

Having said that I still prefer both the p226 and 75 series pistols. They just feel better in the hand. Cannot really identify the specific reasons why, feel I guess. You won't be disappointed with any of them, they are all great pistols.

Steyr Handguns are fantastic and extremely rewarding... if you're willing to have a little patience with them at first. You can see my review of the L for more detail. Canada seems to get the lemons.

Thanks Jarvy. I'm going to stay clear of this one. I know I'll be happier with one of the old faithfuls.

Cheers,

Even the "old faithfuls" have issues....so don't believe everything you read. Glock just had to redesign a recoil spring for its Gen 4 17...the flagship gun of the entire company. The Steyr is a rock solid pistol...I own two of them and can say nothing negative. There was an extraction issue, but thats long been resolved. Steyr isn't hugely popular in Canada as its Glocks half brother who has been written out of the will. It doesnt have the same support as other firearm companies here, and the extraction issue left a bad taste in everyones mouth when it was introduced...especially when dealers couldnt provide answers when asked,or service when needed. Don't kid yourself....The Steyr is an incredibly fine firearm.

There is not much old faithfuls left out there...unfortunately.
You have to remember that even the old, good designs ALWAYS had issues.
Fact is that today every, negative information is spreading much faster and wider than in the past.
People tend to repeat what they heard without second thought and after a while You may have an impression that there is a serious issue with the firearm...when there is none.

Great pistol! Zero issues with my M40A1. They had FTE issue on the FIRST GEN. but that issue had been solved long time ago like one of the members said. I am picking up the L9A1 this weekend. Supposed to have even better trigger pull.

AKA the Glock killer. I like mine it fits nice in my hand. Low recoil. I can shoot about two hundred rounds of 124 grain before I get fatigued. I like the sights the design is what I like the most they really thought about quick target acquisition the sides of the pistol are shaped to bring your eye to the sights quickly. You will notice this when you hold it.
