I've come across the following IHC Garand, which I'm thinking of purchasing. From the pictures I've received, the major parts (receiver, bolt, barrel, oprod, gas plug, windage/elevation knobs, trigger group) appear to be correct for an IHC. The stock is likely a replacement as it has no cartouches/stamps and from what I can see of the profile, does not match an IHC stock. I've also been told that the bore is bright and very good.

I've been looking for a while for an IHC, but don't have much experience with identifying "correct" ones aside from the reading I've done.

I'd like the opinion of people on whether the parts look to be for the most part correctly matching and if the metalwork looks to have the original finish and what a fair price for this rifle in today's market (I'm thinking in the $1500 range, but that's just based on other non-IHC Garands that I've seen pass through the EE).

I've got a lot more photographs than what I've included in this post, so if you're interested, have a look at this gallery: http://s292.photobucket.com/user/jsmithsmithj/library/IHCGarand?sort=3&page=1

Everything that we can see in these pics looks IHC except for the stock. The hammer should have "IHC" along with the drawing number and the safety should have an "F" stamp on the rt side. The following parts should have a single letter stamped on them; rear sight base, clip latch, follower and perhaps the op rod catch. An IHC stock should have 4 numbers stamped in the bottom of the op rod channel. An IHC stock should also show an indentation on the rt side below the windage knob. The stock should also show the DAS stamp (eagle and stars) on the left side as well as the "P" proof mark in a circle on the inside of the grip. IHC made the fewest rifles of the 4 US producers. Rifling looks sharp. Based on going prices for Garands in the EE it should be worth $1500 anyway.

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I know the pictures weren't a lot to go off on. I've gone ahead and made an offer... if it's accepted we'll see what other parts are IHC when it arrives.

Big question: any hope in hell of getting a replacement IHC stock or should I just let it be?

Is that black? As I recall, the U.S. was still using parkerizing in the mid 50's. Parkerizing isn't black.
"..."correct" ones..." A lot of those have been made that way by people with too much time and money.

Stock should have a serial number in the barrel channel, doesn't match the gun, none did. receiver looks re-finished.

I'm a little leery to make a judgement on the colour of the finish. A lot depends on the lighting/flash used and the photos I've received have some variation. Sure wish I could get some good daylight non-flash photos as that would help a lot. Beyond colour, is there any other hints as to whether the parts have been refinished?

Parkerizing color is tough to call based on a photo. Metal was habitually blasted prior to re-Parkerizing which tends to erode the markings/stampings/edges to some extent. These look pretty crisp. I have several IHCs with original finish, but can't call this one based on pictures. The numbers in the stock channel of an IHC stock indicate the Julian date when the stock was produced and have no relationship to either the receiver s/n or the barrel date. All IHC rifles used LMR contract barrels. LMR barrel dates do not have a direct relationship to the date when an IHC receiver was made, but I call this an original barrel based on one of my IHCs in the same s/n range having a like dated barrel. I don't see an arsenal re-build etching on the rt side receiver leg as was applied in the timeframe up until 1968/69.

It is very tough to find an original IHC stock. If found, expect to pay mucho dinero.

Nice postage stamp IHC, like others have said from the pics you posted all looks good except the stock. The receiver looks off but I think it's just some of the pics as pic 9 looks good showing park colour. Here's the Julian dated stock off one of my ihc's, 245 day of 1955

Btw hope your offer accepted, be a nice addition to the collection.

My IHC has the serial number painted yellow, I am assuming that may have been done by a previous owner or were there ones done this way?

Highlighted by the previous appreciator

ETA; looks like a completely USGI Garand, even if *perhaps* mismatched;

Garand prices sit me on my a**; I remember a different time, and would rather buy ammo (1500$!);

I'd buy it. But not without looking at it firsthand, natch

Trigger group is IHC as well as the bolt. Not for sale at this time though.
