I will soon be shoping for my first 1911. My choice has finally come down to a Kimber or a Springfield. I want it to be a Stainless with combat night sights and 30 LPI front strap checkering. I am unsure about an ambi safety and mag well. I like basic guns, not too tricked out and that you shoot as you would carry them. I would appreciate the opinions of you guys that own those brands of handguns (good points and bad points).

Its a big day today. Harper becomes officially our Prime Ministre and hopefuly the beginning of the end of The People's Republik of Kanada!

Boils down to budget, avaliability and personal preference.

And please use the search function; these kind of comparison (Kimber vs Para vs STI vs Springfield vs Colt vs...) has been done over and over.

I just picked up a Valtro that is hard chrome. My local gun store had a pair of them that had been rework by shooting FX in Vancouver. I am really looking forward to shooting it.

I have owned to Springfields and while they are not bad for the price, a top quality 1911 like a Kimber, STI, etc is hard to beat. The fit and finish is better, and the triggers on any of my Kimbers or STI is hands-down better than the triggers on the SAs that I owned. Yes, you pay a bit more, but it is worth it in my opinion. Hell, the way prices have come down on Kimbers and STIs, it is hard to complain....

I own a Kimber and would recommend them to anyone but a word of warning to you, if you go with them get one that has an internal extractor. My TLE II has the external extractor and it gave me some problems early on. Plus, I've heard of quite a few others that experienced the same thing. I got the problems with mine corrected and it's a tack driving beast that will eat any ammo now but if I had it to do all over again I would go with the IE.

Own a Kimber TLE RLII & love it..My next one would be a beater & will go w/SA GI .45 for $675.00 or would even consider the Norc 1911...

Funny that Kimber has gone back to the internal extractor but kept kinda quiet about it .Never admiting that the external one caused problems .Kimbers have mim parts SA's don't.

Well of course they aren't going to admit they had problems... cuz the owners of external extractor models like me would be worried and ask for a recall.

I've had my kimber TLE/RLII since Nov 05 and it has the "dreaded" external extractor. But I've had nothing but a top experience with mine. I've got close to 2000 rounds through it and it fires clean, dirty, factory loads, reloads, without any problems. No feeding problems, not extracting problems. The only problem the Kimber has is me.... I shoot to the left a lil. Everyone else shoots fine with it. But after some practice and working on my grip I've moved to center. Also I had my trigger reworked so its lighter, the pull is nice and smooth, and the reset is shorter, its buttah. Oh and its spendy to shoot, thats the only other problem I have with it.

I have two Springfield 1911's - Loaded Black Stainless and the TGO. Both are excellent guns, nice feel good trigger and very accurate. I have only held Kimber's so can't comment on them except that they look like good a good quality gun. Both are good choices in my opinion.

Owned both and definitely preferred the Kimber! I like the "worn in" finish on the Kimber. I found the edges on the Springfield too sharp for my liking.
