About to purchase my first handgun and would like some suggestions. have been looking at the following Browning 1911 22, GSG 1911 22, and the S&W 22a.
Any suggestions a new shooter should go to? Like the Browning but not sure if it is worth the extra dollars.

Thanks

Those are all good guns, others to consider are Ruger MKIII,Browning Buckmark series and then there are all kinds of Revolvers.

Yeah, too many variables to give you a more specific recommendation. They all work. If you want a 1911 pattern then add the Sig 1911-22 to your list of choices. Personally, if I were to pick up a new 22 pistol, it would be one of the BuckMarks.

See if you can try them out before buying.

I agree the Buckmark or any of the Browning designed pistols in .22lr are great choices and I have owned several of them.

That said I just bought a Ruger SR-01 8 shot revolver with a 4.2" barrel. I think for a general range companion the gun is going to be a real winner. It should mate well with it's older kin the GP-100.

personally i'd take a ruger Mk III or a buckmark over any of those. The browning would be my last choice, i hate scaled down versions. GSG's are fun, especially if you have a 45 as well, cheap practice, but the buckmark or ruger will be more accurate and durable.

Browning makes the Buckmark which was just an updated version of the Browning Challenger series of pistols.

Yes i know, i was referring to the reduced frame 1911 in 22 they make. I was less then clear.

I beleive that the buckmark was a totally new pistol rather then a redesign, but i'm not a browning rimfire expert. Whoops, i may be thinking of the medalists.......

If you're looking at getting a 1911 style gun in .22 the GSG is the way to go - the Sig 1911-22 is just a remarketed GSG. The Browning gun isn't an accurate representation of a 1911 due to it's size.

There were three pistols in the Challenger series, the Nomad, Challenger and Medalist. I owned the Challenger. The Nomad has cheaper grips as I recall and of course the Medalist had a heavy barrel along with a different grip, a forearm of sorts. The Buckmark evolved from the NCM series. When I compared the two series it seemed to me the changes were mostly cosmetic but there may well have been other changes not apparent to the eye.

My Challenger cost me about $65 back in 1966, I believe the Nomad was $49.00 and the Medalist about $125.00. Times have changed.

I have the Smith 22a. Was super cheap, and it's been a hoot. Accurate and mild-mannered. Not a fan of the mag release, but it's been a sweetheart to me.

Gsg for me, the more i shoot it the.more i love it..... Happily shooting a box of fed bulk every time i go to the range, seems flawless since i pollished the feed ramp, great quality mags, and suprisingly acurate..... Got mine from armco, so its had a few tuning tweeks, but still for the money.......awesome.

+1 For the GSG
4500 rounds and counting through mine with no problems at all it seems to like the federal bulk best i wind up shooting at least 1 525 pack every time i go to the range with it
