I'm looking at getting a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm for my first pistol. What are your guys' opinions on that? Is it a good pistol? I can get the Range Kit that comes with the case, 3 mags, a holster and a speed loader for $699. I'm really leaning towards it. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with this firearm? I did my research on Google and Youtube and hear good things, but I'm just curious if anyone has had any bad experiences. Thanks.

Do a search here as well, tons of thread on the M&P. Consensus is usually: good reliable affordable pistol, sucky trigger.

Yup purchased a range kit a few years back. The pistol has worked flawlessly through many classes and practice sessions with bare minimum cleaning. As pointed out the trigger takes some getting use to so I have switched to an APEX which had transformed the firearm.

What bcsteve said.
Handsome gun. Not the most accurate polymer gun out there. Good value if you get the range kit as it's IDPA ready.
Trigger is long and heavy. Reset is vague.
Reliable with most ammo.
I've shot M&Ps a lot. If I wasn't a Glock guy, I would probably own one.

Love mine, the 9mm range kit was my fist handgun purchase. I actually don't find the trigger too bad and I have more than gotten used to it, it's a great bit of value for what you get and there's a diy trigger job you can do if you really want to smooth it out. I'd recommend holding it at the minimum or shooting one if you can prior to buying it, if it doesn't fit your hand it doesn't matter what the price is imho.

One of the better pistols out there right now in terms of bang for your buck, especially for a beginner.

An Apex trigger turns it into a whole new gun. I regret selling an M&P40 I had a while back with some work done to it. It was a sweet shooter!

I love mine! It's light, durable, reliable...not the most accurate like Still Alive has said, and the trigger could be better but for the money I'm extremely happy.
If you don't mind buying used, keep an eye out in the EE, they frequently come up for sale between $500-550.

Can't go wrong with an M&P. Great guns for a great price.

If you look on the EE, you'll often find some for sale for a better price (if you don't mind buying used. Which you shouldn't)

Bought mine in 2007, it's seen 55000+ rounds (lost count a couple of years ago) - zero parts failure, done 2 fairly intensive pistol courses with no issues, and is accurate enough for a service pistol (will put 11 rounds into a 3x5 card at 15 yards rapid fire). Easy to shoot, utterly reliable, easy to maintain. You can drop in an Apex sear and polish a couple of parts yourself and you have a really great trigger, or you can go crazy on the trigger with all sorts of crap that I don't recommend. Keep in mind that mine has none of the "fixes" done to later guns. I have replaced worn parts (springs, followers, strikers) but beyond that nothing. It looks a little scruffy now, but after tens of thousands of draws and dry fires, I think it just has character.

A year ago the M&P range kit was my first pistol purchase. I love to shoot this gun. I added the M&P22 and between the two of them they make a great afternoon of plinking and shooting.

Have used M&P, Pro9L and ProCORE9L w/optic extensively. Thousands and thousands of rounds.
Apex sear is a good idea.
Outstanding service type pistols.

What sort of shooting are you planning to do?

Great gun all round imho. I was lucky I managed to get a good trigger on mine, no gritty feel at all, the reset isn't that bad either. I was prepared for the inherent faults everyone talks about and it wouldn't have changed my view. It is ergonomically designed to be comfortable and fits well into my hands which are small but fairly "fat". It's easy to shoot and control and makes me a bit more confident.

Well i purchased one, and had a chance to try it out at the range. I love it. I can see how the trigger may be annoying compared to higher end pistols, but being a guy who has never shot a pistol before, i am very impressed. 150 rounds through it so far. Thanks a lot for your replies!

I just bought one. Picking it up later this month once I finish paying off the final little bit. But mine came with 4 mags, and I got an extra 3 used off the EE. two of my friends have them and love them, and I decided to go with it due to the feeling of holding it. Holding a glock feels like holding a Lego brick to me and it isn't nice.. M&P just felt right and what I've heard is its a nice little pistol. I plan on changing out my trigger after a month or so to the apex one just because I don't like the feeling of it anyways. Trigger is what most people complain about from what I've seen.

I only can speak for the M&P 45 as I never had a nine...but they are similar. Long lasting, reliable. If you don't want to spend another 250 for the Apex kit, google or you tube search for " Burwell trigger job" ...can be done without special tools and brought my trigger down from 7.8lbs scratchy to 3.5 smooth.
