For older eyes:
I am looking for advice on the point and shoot "dot" syle of sight. I had bad luck with a Bush.....Tro.. sight. Took forever to get it sighted in so I bought a bore sighter and then discovered the sight will not hold point of impact, it wanders from shot to shot. That took about 60 rounds to discover. I thought it was me so shot with the open sights and found a nice tightish group on the 100yd target. (the mounts are rock solid btw. ) I had it mounted on my 1895 Marlin 45-70, 305grain factory bullets. Does not seem to be enough recoil from that rifle to destroy the sight. So off it came and back to open sights. Perhaps just a dud but once bitten..... .

What are you guys using in this style of sight and what do you like about it? I am not really intested in magnification because we are usually in the bush.

Red dot sights are becoming standard equipment for driven game shoots in Europe, especially Germany. Aimpoint is popular there, as well as the high end Euro makes like Zeiss and S&B, etc.
The first driven wild boar that I shot in Germany was with a borrowed rifle. The Blaser R93 & red dot sight was very quick and instinctive to use, and the rifle fit well, but unfortunately the sight had weak old batteries.
When the boar ran towards me, I could barely make out the dot against the fur, and stopped my swing. I shot the boar through the hams instead of the chest. Good thing my German buddy was able to back me up and the wounded boar only made it about 50 meters. I learned to check the batteries after that!

Red dot

I have a Trigicon reflex on my Marlin 45-70 and it has been on my .458 Lott fast accurate and no batteries and no recoil problems.

stay safe
pounder

also no problem in the cold

Great for quick target acquisition and they tend to be more durable the your average scope and alot of them you can pull off the gun and the. Reattache and still be zero

I have had a bushnel trophy red dot with the shade tube that screws on the front and I have used it on my bubba 6.5 swede and then it moved to my H&R handi rifle in .243.

So far it works fine for me.
Both eyes open, point and shoot. :)

I hope to be trying it on a Handi rifle in 45/70 soon.

Decided to get mine after a hunt in the Ardennes. I got a Bushnell 4200 elite 1.25x4 20mm red dot. Perfect for running game at 1.25x and does fine at 4x for longer shots. The red dot is much easier and faster to see against the black fur of a boar or a moose...
