I think I'm gonna start taking grandads old .222 Remington out more often. One thing I would like to do is put some nicer glass on it though. Anyone have any recommendations?

I am wanting to use it as a medium range target rifle, out to MAX 500y if possible but average around 300y. So something similar to the 3-12x magnification range give or take. One thing I would like are target turrets.

Price range under $500

Thanks.

P&D in Edmonton (there is a link in the banner up top) have good prices on Nikon scopes. If you are going to do any gopher shooting you might want more than 12x. For power I like at least 20x but that could just be my eyes getting a little weak in my old age. I think you can find a Vortex in that price range as well - some guys swear by them others swear at them. I have both and do prefer the Nikon but the Vortex isn't bad, just think the Nikon is a little clearer (is that a word?) in my opinion. Way to go on the .222 seems to be a forgotten cartridge these days. I have two and love 'em. You can shoot all day and not feel it in the shoulder, not real loud and very accurate. If you hand load they can really get dialed in.

That cartridge is one of my sentimental favourites, since the first brand-new, non-surplus-Bubba-special centerfire I ever purchased was a BSA in that chambering. It was an unbelievably accurate shooter, and spoiled me badly...I went through a handful of other guns after that one before realizing how special it had been, and how stupid I was for having sold it.

I have one now, a super-lightweight Sako AIII sporter, and have it scoped with a Leupold 6X AO fixed power. The accuracy of the gun would definitely merit a more powerful scope, but it's a nice, compact gun and the Leupold helps keep it that way; perfect walking-around rifle for shot opportunities at coyotes. I never could warm up to the .22Hornet, but I'll always own a .222Rem.

Yep, Its a neat old gun. Even when I had first started shooting and had little talent I could get respectable groups with factory ammo. And since its a family rifle its worth starting to reload. Should make a nice little plinker for when I want a little more then a .22LR but don't want 30 cal.

As for optics, I was looking at the Nikon scopes as they seem to be very good value. I am not an expert on scopes however so I like to hear what people have to say first.
