Id like to put a scope on my VZ... I know these rifles can be pretty hard on optics, especially when you do alot of rapid firing. it will be mounted over the dust cover with a side mount. Id like to spend $200-250 and am not looking to snipe anything from 1000 yards. Just something good for 100 yards or so.

Anyone got any suggestions. I have a good red dot if I want to use that. But id like a proper scope as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Don't run a side mount, you have to drill out your receiver and it also looks stupid. Not sure on pricing but it's also probly expensive. I'd run an Nea ar style stock adapter and get the cantilever mount. It is detachable in seconds and has repeatable zero. Also doesn't flop around like a scout mount that mounts on the rear sight leaf. It's only 70 for te adapter and like 140 for the cantelever, hard to find now tho cause they stopped making them. There are also railed dust covers but they are expensive too

Side rail is a factory part that mounts with the pre-drilled and tapped holes in the side of a VZ58. Mine looks sweet and is super tight, didnt require any mods and is completely removable if I want to take it off some day. I much prefer this as its easy to remove (easier than the cantilever for sure).

Still, no ones got any suggestions for an actual scope? Oh well... I just picked up a bushnell from my local store. Its supposed to be durable enough to survive on a VZ so we'll see.

I suggest something like a millet dms-1. I just sold one, because I did not really have the use for it anymore, but I really liked it. 1-4x so you get a great balance between faster/closer stuff, to 100-200 yards or more depending on what you want. Illuminated donut reticle, nice glass, felt very solid, 30mm tube. Personally I've found red dots and irons to be perfectly suitable for 100 rounds, but if you want a scope, it's a good bargain.

As for standing up to the vz's recoil, it shouldnt really be an issue if you go with a half way decent piece of glass. It's a pretty mild round, so as long as it's not getting bombarded with brass, you'll be fine.

I'd definitely run the side rail, since you already have one installed. I put one on an sks I had, and alternated between a posp fixed 4x scope ad a pk-a red dot. Which were both very cool optics as well. Had no problems returning to zero, and easily attachable/removable. I would definitely use it over the cantilever and railed stock adapter, like you said. You already have the side rail, and I think they look awesome, especially since they suit the rifle. Plus with the railed stock adapter it's too high for factory irons.

you will need a scope with a very short eye relief, preferably less than 2 inches, and the tube itself needs to be short (7.5 inches is the maximum that does not causes any additional problems) to be right behind ejection port, otherwise the spent casings will be hitting it.
I have NcStar 2-6x28 it has the maximum dimensions that will be ok, but i think a shorter scope with very short i relief will be even better.

The Bushnell 1x32 Trophy T-dot works fantastic on mine, with the NEA upper handguard. Once you get your holds figured out, it is great on gongs out to 400m. 500m is a bit much tho.

Yeah, but you could make those shots with irons, standing, in a 20 mph crosswind.

I tried out a Tasco 3-9X40 and it was WAY too long. Brass really beat the crap out of it. So I took that off and put it on my 10/22, which is perfect. I put my barska red dot on the hand guard and sighted that in and its a really nice setup for fast acquisition but for better precision I put the NCstar 4x illuminated scope on my side mount and it works great. As a new gun owner I made the mistake of buying a few NCstar products. This is one I actually like and it held up to nearly 300 rounds this afternoon. It was easy to sight in and holds zero perfect on my side mount. Its nice and short as well so the shells dont get anywhere near it.

Im happy with these setups now. I have options for whatever I want.

NC Star is junk.

The best part of NC star (from what I seen at my range) is when the owners take them off and shoot them.

Important life lesson... when it comes to optics you very much get what you pay for: buy the best you can possibly afford at the time. If it means upgrading later than so be it; buy cheap means buy twice.

These are my 2 setups now. They both seem to work well. But time will tell.

No, the brass does not hit this one. The Tasco scope I had was more than twice as long as this one and it got really beat up. Shells would deflect back into the breach and jam the gun up. I put nearly 300 rounds through this one tonight and not one cause any issues and not one hit the scope. For the $99 or so I paid for it, im happy with this optic until it inevitably fails and I get a better one. Good thing about this one is that it has cross hairs that are not illuminated when its off, so even if the electronics fail, I can still use it.
