I got a Remington 700 5R milspec and its great but I was stupid enough to get a ####ty 150 dollar Bushnell scope. Basically I don't know very much about optics and I'm wondering what would be a great VERSATILE, reliable, and accurate scope that can hold a zero. My budget is 900 dollars.

Bushnell 4200 Elite Tactical 6-24 X 50,
decent zoom range, Mil dot, Large lense for lots of light and clarity (for the price), Resettable Target turrets. You dial your scope in for your common yardage then losen the turrets and lift/turn them back till they read zero and re tighten them, wa la. You now can adjust your scope for a new yardage and just dial it back to " zero" and be back on the money at your common yardage, AND it can be had usually for around $700

Best bang for the buck. Lens wise it's not a big dollar Leupold or Nightforce but your not paying that price and it does come right back to zero time and time again.

Hey schlehofer

I am in a similar quandary. I just purchased 5R (yet to be received) and I was quite stumped as to what scope to get. My budget is about $800 so similar to yours. Thanks to the guys here, I think I have decided to go with the Bushnell 4200 6-24x50mm Mil Dot. This was the top end of my scope budget so I won't bother telling the other choices. Good luck with your decision.

Here is my thread:

PS Don't put too much emphasis on anything I say... I am a total newb... but I am trying!

I was using a Bushnell 4200 Elite Tactical 6-24x50 on my .338 LM when I first got it and like Ice-Pick said your not getting a Leupold Mark 4 or a Night force, but for $700 to $800 this scope would be a good choice. Works great very repeatable. The side parallax adjustment, raised turrets, 50mm objective and 24 power are all nice features.

Bushnell 10x40 is probably the least expensive scope that would do the job for you. No adjustable parallax, but good adjustments. Well reported.
One of the Falcon Menace scopes. Also excellent buys.

If I was going to look at the Falcon for a 5R, it would be the new one at 5.5-25x with FFP. It has the necessary eye relief.

Other options: Bushnell elite 4200, Burris scopes (XTR and other varmint/target versions), and the last version of the Falcon.

I'd also consider searching the EE for a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm with the 1000 yard Rapid Z reticle. for a little more I'd consider the Sightron Siii but I'd buy it brand new not used.

I am really impressed with the new gen SII and SIII side focus scopes. Optics and mechanicals are definitely best in class and equal/better then scopes costing a lot more. Mechanicals seem to be working great too.

I have used many of the Elite 4200 and 6500 and these are great scopes at very competitive pricing.

Let me know if I can help you source a scope.

i was trying to keep away from Bushnell cus i heard they were like the Mastercraft of scopes, decent but its no Hilti

how is this .... http://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_32_140&products_id=1506

or somebody suggested this http://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_32_137&products_id=259

also does anybody know where i can get a pic rail for my rem 700 5R because i could only find the Dual Dovetail Bases that fit mine. thank you

For a good all purpose scope the first scope would work great. If you want a more long range/precision scope i would go with your second choice or this 6500 http://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_32_137&products_id=262

Your ####ting me? "i was trying to keep away from Bushnell cus i heard they were like the Mastercraft of scopes, decent but its no Hilti"
and your budget is $900,
You were expceting a hilti(comparison) for that budget?
Bushnell best bang for the buck in that price range.
If you scrounge up $1500 plus start looking at the Luep's and the N/F's

I as a rule of thumb try not to spend more on the scope than the rifle.

The bushnell will do you fine.

Leupold LRT Mk. 4 is a very nice scope. Judging by the ad you had the link to, the price's have gone up since I checked them out.
Last time I had $1500 to spend I went for the N/F.
http://www.hirschprecision.com/
I had looked at the Mk. 4 at 25X mag. Why do you want tactical?
What do you plan to do with the rifle?

NXS2256 NXS 5.5-22X56 $ 2080.00

Now your talking way over your origional budget of $900.

The tactical bushnell at $700 will still work very well.
I origionally had one on my 6 BR for 1000 yd shooting.
Bought the Night Force after to get the 42X mag.

yeah okay. Ice Pick I reckon that your rule of thumb is a good idea, that puts my price range at about 1400 dollars. im thinking of getting a leupold like this one http://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_33_175&products_id=534 is this a good tactical scope ? and what is Matte Mil Dot ? and Matte Duplex ? is it the cross hair type ?

Matte is the finish. Think Matte black. And yes Duplex and Mildot are the reticle. The M1 is the style of turret. 14X is not quite enough mag in my mind for long range (1000 plus yards). I think I am going to put this Mark 4 on my new build. http://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_33_175&products_id=555. I will use it more for coyote calling so I want to be able to go below 8.5X if I call a critter in real close and 20X is still decent for long range
