I will be picking up a Savage Mark II TR before spring and was wondering what you guys would recommend for a decent budget scope? It will be used mainly for 50m and some 100m Bench shooting. I am looking for something with target turrets that wont break the bank.

Thanks

have a look at the Sightron SII and SII Big Sky products.

Excellent optics and mechanicals and for the performance they provide, dirt cheap.

I have a SII Big Sky 36x42 mounted on my Savage 93 MKII F class practise rifle and am enjoying the great resolution. Makes very small windage adjustments possible.

Like MysticPlayer shows, get lots of magnification. At least 24x for the top power.

When you write "wont break the bank" (sic) can you give us a number for your budget?

+1 to both of these. Your desire for benchrest quality glass and "budget scope" don't really go together too well.

If you can live with a fixed power scope, you typically get better optics and performance at any given price point than with a variable power scope.

I don't have a concrete number on a budget yet. Im not going to be doing any serious competing just mainly fun matches and shooting in the back field. I was thinking around 3-400. So I am going to keep an eye out for some used scopes. Anyone know of anywhere I could see what a target at 50meters would look like through a 36x SII?

Thanks

No idea, but I know that 15x or 16x is more than enough for me to clearly see a 1/2" dot at 100yds. 36x would let me resolve a 1/4" dot at 100yds easily.

On my CIL/Anschutz 310 with a 4-16x40AO Bushnell 4200 I can easily see and aim at the staples holding the target at 50yds at 16x.

One thing to note is that the high magnification scopes will show you every little wiggle or movement of your gun unless it has a solid stock and is used with a stout rest system. 15x lets me see my heartbeat on my 12FV when aiming at 200yds while using a front rest and a rear bag. The Savage tupperware stock could really use to be more rigid for bench use.
