I have seen Ruger 10-22 rifles with barrels from 8 1/2" on a Krinker kit to 20" and almost everything in between

Is there a barrel that is too short or a length too long ?

How do the different barrel lengths affect accuracy ?

16 or 16.5 inches (can't remember which) is optimal for a .22 cal.

If I remember correctly, around 16 inches is optimal for 22 LR velocity. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the absolute best length though. And of course it all changes if you're using target or subsonic ammo.

So what length is the best? I don't know. I think it varies greatly especially depending on what type of stock you have. I have a 20" bull barrel on mine and I like the balance and weight for target shooting. For a lightweight plinker or packer, smaller would be better.

16" is right around optimum. On a 10/22 that is about the perfect length too because anything shorter and it hasn't reached optimum speed (or accuracy probably) and anything more the recieve will have more trouble holding up (more stress on the action) as well as harmonics are affected - probably in a negative way as the barrel is vibrating more with a longer barrel.

So what kind of accuracy will the 8 1/2" krinker's get ?

How much velocity loss?

Is there a flash at the end of these short barrels ?

Is all the powder not burned or something along those lines ?

How about a .22 revolver with a 6" BBL in a Ransom rest ?

Long story short......I want to hit a 1" - 2" circle at 50 meters 10 out of 10 times.............and I want to do it with the shortest Ruger 10-22 non restricted combonation of stock and BBL length.

Right now I am looking at a Boyds Barracuda Stock and a 12" custom made ER Shaw Barrel ...OAL is 28" on that combo

You might get a little flash with some Stingers or other hyper velocity ammo and the 8.5 barrel......very little flash with stingers in my Ruger pistol with 5.5" barrel.
I chrony'd some .22 ammo out of my Ruger 22/45 with the above mentioned barrel, and I seem to recall the 1250fps rated was runing 1075 out of the 5.5" barrel. It was a while ago, but I'll do some more next time I'm out.....
