I want to re-barrel a couple of these rifles (previously sporterized) and was wondering what calibre or cartridge(s) would be compatible. I was thinking about 300 savage or maybe 250-300 savage-or if I thought I could do it I would try 444 Marlin. Are there any others possible?

First choice is, of course, the original 6.5x55. Other than that, your choices of 300 and 250 savage are viable. Other possibilities would include the 257 Roberts, 7x57 or 8x57. Regards, Bill.

Thanks for the info. I recently re-barrelled one in 6.5x55 and it looks good although I have yet to shoot it. I thought about 444 Marlin just because of the new Hornady ammo that's on its way-but I don't want a single-shot. I'm not a reloader so ammo availability is a factor. Is 284 too high-pressure for this action?

The 284 would be excessive for this action IMO. In addition, the slightly fatter case might cause some feeding problems. The 7x57 would be a much better choice. Regards, Bill.

Thanks Bill. I do like the 7mm Mauser idea. Does anything have to be done to the bolt face or are the dimensions of the back of the cartridge close enough? I thought that 6.5x55 was a touch wider but maybe not with the North American ammunition.

or stick with 6.5x55 and make it look like this

Looks good...Sincerely. I did recently re-barrel a Krag in 6.5 x 55 so I didn't really want to duplicate that one. If the existing barrels weren't as totally corroded as they are I would not be considering this procedure. Nice stock on that one of yours...How is the scope attached?
