I've got a vz58 and I'm looking to go with something like a holosun or sparc AR on it. I'm happy with my current furniture on it so I was thinking of just grabbing that NEA upper handguard/rail piece. I'm a little worried it might by a tad too far forward but I'm more concerned that it will sit too low for my liking. I know it's desirable to others because you can co-witness but I'd rather it not do that. I guess it would make a difference if it was absolute or 1/4 co witness - I an just imagine those big sights getting in the way.

Has anyone got a similar setup? Pics? Opinions?

edit: just realized the sparc AR has the riser built in (it's called ar, go figure) so that might not work unless their 1/3 co witness attachment sits high enough where it's just out of the way of the sights?

Side rail low profile mound worked great for me! Retains zero after you take it off which is great for cleaning.

Shane, are you in the lower mainland? I use an aluminum upper handguard that is not as low as the nea and will not Co witness when I use the low mount on my holosun. I like having the holosun at the front because it allows you to have a better peripheral vision when you run through a match course having both eyes open. This helps me with my situational awareness and reduces the likelihood of me failing to engage a target because I failed to notice it.

I would like to replace my current handguard with an nea because I would like the co witnessing. If you like my setup, I could sell it to you and I can then buy me an nea. The handguard I got its in like new condition. I got it as a present last Xmas. Before that I used a fab defence plastic handguard with my holosun. That plastic one is also available.

I have the BC Tactical fore end with a Vortex Sparc with no riser. There's no co-witness at all. I like the setup though because, like Slamfyre above, it gives me more peripheral vision for better situational awareness. An NEA upper may be nice but I like the BC Tac lower (I don't know if they would work together).

I have the CSA low profile side mount that was on the rifle when I bought it, but it's too high for me and puts the optic far too close for my liking. I'll likely be selling soon.

An old pic but it shows the fore end and the Sparc;

You've got to have a lot of things going for you to get a red dot to co-witness on a VZ58. Avoiding it is easy. Neither the Holosun nor the Sparc AR will co-witness regardless of how low your handguard rail is. Their mounts are too high. As long as you avoid the Bushnell TR-25 or micro red dots you won't co-witness. If you're worried about it though there are other front rail options.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if you're purposefully trying to avoid co-witnessing you'll probably lose your cheek weld, depending on your stock. It may not seem like a big deal but it will get old pretty fast.

I have the Upper Hand Guard Rail from Corwin-Arms and a Sig Sauer Romeo 5 Red Dot, mounted way to the front. I really quite like it.

Can't quite co-witness... Well, I could, if I move the tangent to 700 meters and then adjust the front post up enough to create a new zero (not going to do it). The dot is just high enough that a comfortable cheek weld works.

Moving a Red Dot forward has a couple of beneficial effects. It reduces the parallax distance (yes, even RD's suffer from parallax below 10-25 yards, depending on the model). It shrinks the dot somewhat, which I like. I find most RD's a little large, take up too much space and blurry if mounted to close. It also reduces the amount your field of view is obscured by the housing of the dot.

The Sparc, Holosun, Sig, all use "standard" riser mounts, so you can swap them out for whatever height you like.

for co-witness you need a NEA upper hand guard rail with a very low red dots like a bushnell trs or other ,

Red dot sights are used with both eyes open. When shooting you notice the dot and the post has a tendency to disappear. With additional use one normally starts to ignore the post and concentrate on the dot.
Not a big deal.

Retroarms from across the pond.

They used to sell just the upper hand guard, now upper and lower for 63.00 U.S. It is marketed as air soft to get around "the man". The top of the sight protector is just visible in the bottom of the red dot.

I actually like the BC tactical one best for the look but I don't like how open the top guard is with the piston wide open to the elements. That scares me a bit. How was the fit on yours? And how is cheek weld with that setup? I have the AR15 adapter and that cheapo m4 buttstock so it would likely come off in the same angle as yours.

The holosun comes with a low mount, I can't imagine it sits any higher than the bushnell (look at the pic a couple posts back). I've already got a holosun 403a that I'm going to use on the gun. I'll get the sparc AR for my SR22 to replace the holosun.

I went back to the side mount after having my spark mounted forward , it worked ok but I didn't like the heat up there on electronics ?
The battery died on my spark and you have to order them in so now I'm starting to like the open sights . For surplus ammo I can only get so accurate anyways.

That op rod could be completely exposed with no guard at all and it would run fine (check out this AK74 and keep in mind that's a long stroke piston, not the short stroke in the VZ58 that, in comparison, barely moves);

The fit required a bit of adjustment with a dremel and fits VERY tight.

The cheek weld is great with the optic, I'm not sure about the irons.

I've got a holosun 503C on mine. It also comes with a low mount but is still quite a bit higher than the bushnell.

Yeah, I wish I could fire my VZ with the body cover removed, but no. I suppose you could cut parts of it away to view the action... no thanks.

Oh my lord, that was satisfying to watch.

"If AK breaks, remove broken part. Keep firing."
