ORA Service Rifle Clinic #2 and#3 2015 - AAR

The ORA conducted Service Rifle Clinics #2 and #3 this past weekend at CFB Borden, Vimy Range.Though colder than most would have liked (winter just won't quite quit it seems), we were dry so nothing really to complain about weather wise.

There was a mix of experienced service competitors and those new to the sport. It was good to see old faces and meet new ones.

We received instruction on fundamentals of marksmanship principals, shooting positions, zeroing from 100-500 yds, moving target practice, wind reading and the basics of how things work down in the butts (not as ###y as the shooting but essential to conducting the match).

We all got instruction from our match director Tim K, plus helpful input and tips from the senior shooters there. New shooters also got to test their kit and see how others had their gear set up so that they can make intelligent adjustments prior to the kick off of the competition season. Senior shooters got refreshed on the fundamentals, test kit/equipment/ammo that they may had changed from last season and generally knocked off the rust from a long winter hibernation (at least as far as SR goes).

First match is in two weeks at Connaught Range. Booya!

Excellent experience, organized and informative. I'd repeat the clinic again this weekend if I could.

Came away feeling more confident in my rifle and factory ammo. Some small adjustments to be made with gear, simple things like a better way to stow pen & paper, water and layers of clothing you need in the morning but not in the afternoon. Realized very quickly there are muscles in my neck that don't get used until you go prone for 10x minutes at a time, need to do something about that.

Looking forward to my first visit to Connaught in 2x weeks. Praying for no wind

It was a great experience! I was very happy to get the chance to try out my CQB gear for SR and meet a bunch of great people.

While my ACR did about as well as I could have hoped, I think I will be using my SA20 at the first match. Ironically, both of my rifles got used for the whole clinic(it is good to have a spare)! lol

I am scrambling to come up with some better ammo than the Russian steel cased ammo I was shooting at the clinic and make some adjustments to my gear for SR. It is great to get back into this kind of shooting again.

klatham, not sure what bullet weight you are looking for, but I had good results with PMC 62g out of a 16" 1:9 barrel, not sure how it will perform in a 1:7.

The ammo is available in case lots at The Shooting Edge right now. I just grabbed another 1000x, more $$$ than I wanted to spend but it is what it is.

I had my hopes up that Epps would have fresh stock, stopped in on my way back but they are out. If you are close to Epps, they do have lots of the 120 round boxes of AE 62g @ $60.00 per 120x, and if you buy 10x boxes you save 10% and of course no shipping if you are close by.

Good luck, finding ammo is a pain right now for us non-loaders.

I am looking for 62gr. I did order some Speer 62gr bullets from Budget Shooter Supply and planned to reload for the first match(though time is tight!). Thanks for the tip about Epps, I will give them a shout. TSE is on my avoid list.
