I was at the BC blackpowder cartridge silhouette shoot over the weekend in Heffley creek. On Friday we had an original rifle match, and I ended up winning it. The targets are chickens offhand at 200M, Pigs at 300M from cross sticks, Turkeys at 385M and rams at 500M. I'm super happy with how well the 155 year old roller did. There were Trapdoor Springfields and a .43 Spanish roller.

The caliber is 12.7x44R and the load was the Lee .510 450 gr bullet lubed with SPG, 65 gr Swiss 1.5 fg, .02 card, .03 poly wad and a Winchester LR primer. The old girl still shoots!!

Congrats. In a sea of modern replicas it sure is nice to see a old roller at shoots..Rollers other than the original trigger return spring are great shooters

Thanks guys. I did a lot better than I expected. Those last 3 pigs in a row was a great boost. I still have to play around with the load, but so far it's going well. I may look at a lighter bullet too. Apparently the original bullet for the rifle was like 385 gr

Is anyone in your group experimenting with duplex loads? A small smokeless charge over the primer, then a paper wad, and a proportionally reduced blackpowder charge. The idea is to get the powder column burning hotter and earlier for less fouling.

You could but it wouldn't be allowed in the match.

Chris.
The match committee sets the rules. That's their role. The idea of shooting exclusively black powder is based on opinions of safety. and trying to keep Darwin's Rules from getting applied. However, the DCRA accepted duplex loads for their international long range black powder matches 25 or 30 yrs ago. Rule 12.07 BP Ammunition of https://dcra.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/2024-DCRA-Rulebook.pdf Up to 20% smokeless under blackpowder.

This isn't a DCRA match. I actually didn't know that the DCRA was still allowing duplex. Interesting. I've never really messed with duplex.

Chris.

Read the rule book. They say it is to aid combustion, which makes sense with fouling during a long string. But, the rule says it is discretionary.
