Hi folks,

Ok, I tried my best on my own and failed to find info on what was used originally as finish on the Steyr Mannlicher stock. Would anyone here know? Please :)

Lou

Thanks Mkrnel, very much appreciated. Got a replacement stock for a M95 which is more or less coming back from the bottomless pit of despair, can't wait to try her out at the range!

No Problem Lou, maybe I will see you there with it, they later in their service lifetime also had shellac finishes applied after arsenal rebuilds.

The oil that the Germans used was straight Linseed Oil with a bit of red in it.

You can get it from Mauser-Oberndorf in amounts from 4 ounces to 5 litres. They just all it "Schaftoel": Stock Oil.

I would suspect that the Austrians would hae used something similar.
