Okay... just got the word from TimK that we are good to go on the Sat/Sun of 20-30 Sep.

First of all, I cannot speak too loudly of the cash prizes, but all I can say is that it will be more than last year's $ 1400.00 total. :50cal: Yeah, TimK just told me that we are looking at $ 2000 in cash prizes. ONE knife draw. Last June, one of the A&S Highlanders won that Cold Steel SRK. Then on the July match, one of the Montreal shooters won that SRK. Correct me if I'm wrong ....

Now for those of you who know about the "Lewis System" of dividing up the field of shooters, depending upon the number of classes (TimK says "lots of classes"), he will subdivide the field of shooters into sections and the top 3 of EACH section wins cash prizes. Even the rookies walk away with cash in their hands. (read: bzzr money)

Next, we are on Charlie Range since we need a KRAPload of target lanes. Wayyyyy more than what we are used to. :runaway: I'm keeping mum deliberately about this number. :ninja: TimK tells me to bring my loudest whistle. I don't know if that is gonna work with wayyyy over 10 target bays wide...

I just don't know how I'm gonna cope with way more than the 10 target bays I'm used to yelling over. :eek:

Yes, we are shooting Matches 1 - 8 on Saturday. YES we are shooting THE PLATES Match (not the Pilates Match :D) on Saturday evening. NO CQB shoot on Sunday AM... Just the old fashioned Matches 9 -12 for Sunday.


ShortandLong: Are you gonna come out to play ? I know that Ton45 can't make it but his Quebec contingent will be there.... :p

Who else is on board? Usually Shelldrake shows up to win a bunch of $$ :50cal:

I wish I could still come. Running excuses in my head so I can drop my commitments in order to shoot. Ugh!!!

You guys will be well documented this time around, Phil the photog will be snapping away. This guy just got into shooting, like this year, because of yours truly:evil:. He just finished completing his firearm courses and will hopefully join us in these matches in a few years.

In the meantime there are a few more guys here wanting to join the fun.

We are using 40 target bays....
FIVE classes for the Lewis System dividing process (Master Class, Expert, Sharpshooter, yada, yada yada)
OVER $ 2000 in CASH prizes... I like the cash over the silly badges (badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges...)

And we've got a (experienced shooting Mil Pers for Op Sec) professional photographer on the ground to document OSA's achievements.... Not bad for our first full year of operations.... :rolleyes:

So, how does one get an "invite" to this shoot? Is it invitation only? What is the cost of entry and how many shooters are planning to attend.
Do you need to wear webbing and helmets and all that crap?
 
The invites are for the ATT's needed for Que shooters to bring their black rifles to Ontario shoots. You are most welcome to come and shoot. $ 50.00 for the 2 days. Lots cheaper than paid markers. We are using 40 target bays for FOUR relays of shooters. Yeah, we are hosting a match larger than CFSAC and NSCC, at our little local level. You and I don't need webbing, but I shoot with a Blackhawk STRIKE Molle vest to carry magazines and water for the butts.

Maynard: We can fix you up with a black rifle for the shoot if you wish to come up to Connaught. Regarding rations and quarters, we are already booked solid. You would be on your own for those arrangements. Luckily we can provide you with some ball ammo if you would like.

If you are considering switching over to black rifle shooting (or the dark side) we can get you started. yeeeeeha... Ask the soldiers that shoot our matches, they have a great time. :D

It sounds very tempting but do you have a walk-down for fat bastards with a bad knee? Last time I shot a service rifle event was with an FN. I have been toying with the idea about putting an AR together for a while now.
Do most people shoot ball ammo, besides the militarty shooters of course?
Are the C7 shooters in the same class as the guys with match built AR's?
 
Maynard: Trust me... you are not alone. I've had TWO hip replacements (not one, but two) and I'm still doing the rundowns. It really is lots of fun to tease the soldiers and say, "If you cannot beat my 36 points, then you really suck, since I'm a disabled old bastard". ha ha ha Okay, jokes aside, when I had surgery last year (spring 2006), I opted out of matches 4, 8 and 12 and took the lower aggregate.

Yes, lots of shooters use the 62 gr FMJ bullet (when we could get them). Very few of us use the excellent 68 gr Hornady and 69 Sierra MK. Remember that even the space gunners or custom built and tweaked AR's DO NOT do all that well. The trend we are seeing is that box stock carbines (yes 12" barrels to 16" barrels) do very well against the space guns. Unlike F Class 'Open', Service Rifle is set up so that 'Arms Races' cannot propagate itself. Trust me, I've shot match barrels and I've shot box stock HBar rifles. Most of my DCRA Gold medals were won with box stock Hbar setups. Then when I went to a stainless match 20" barrel with a match chamber, my scores nosedived. :eek:

My scores started to recover in the past 3 years when I switched to a box stock 14.5" or 16" mid length barrel, shooting FMJ 62gr bullets from the US. Nothing fancy. I just started working out in the gym and riding my mountain bike for physiotherapy AND wouldn't you know it? My scores started to improve once again. The rundowns were no longer onerous after riding 19 kliks every day during July and August on my mtn bike.. road rides, I mean. Then I began to work on my weight for my diabetes type 2. I used to wear a 44 Short sportjacket. Now I wear a 40 Short. Dropped some weight, put on more muscle from weightlifting at the YMCA, but now I'm down to Medium sized uniform (BDU, ACU, MARPAT, etc) from a Large/Short.

Yes, the box stock C7A1's and C7A2's kick our civilian rifle butts :eek: which only proves that superior fitness and intense training wins the day. Just look at the Queen's Medal winners and finalists or rather the Stage 2 participants. They are all shooting mid 550's (out of 600) with box stock service rifles. You will rarely find a civvie shooting a space gun in this crowd of excellent marksmen. :D

I concur with Hungry's view of things. If anyone has any concerns about the rundown, then they don't have to do them and they shouldn't feel any less about it.

In the past I have seen those with broken legs, broken or worn out bodies not shoot the rundowns. As long as they are able to do their time in the butts, then its not a problem.

There continues to be one particular ol' time Queen's Medalist that competes at NSCC with an old bolt action rifle. He needed to be driven down to the butts after the rundown matches, but at least he made the effort to come out and enjoy the shoot with the rest of us. I take my hat off to him,,

So, shoot what you got, bring what you got, and do the matches that you feel comfortable with. As long as you are willing to pull your weight while scoring or in the butts, then life is good.

Braaap ------ting ting ting !!! :D Was the sound heard during the plates matches since so much fire was put out at the 4 sets of plates down range.

Too bad i could not do the last rundown... i have an infected blister to carry for the rest of the week ! If i would have ran, according to my calculation, with 20 points i would have won the 500 agg....:redface:

Since no achievement points for 'would', I will see everybody next year !!!!

I'm aching from all the lugging, humping, walking, running, kneeling, Butts-ing, laughing and shooting!!!

And my chin is bruised from where it hit the floor! (Wink, wink)

Practice really DOES pay off!



For any new guys wondering what to think about, I worked on the following prior to this match weekend -

a) upper body work out for joint stability (better hold)

b) using a sling (better hold, better recoil control/return to aim))

c) mag changes in position, with trigger hand, on the fourth shot where applicable (save time on rapids, stay in the sling with non-trigger hand)

d) reliability (got a new scope, tossed faulty mags)

e) trigger job (smoother break was easier to get the shot away when sight picture was there)

f) lots of standing, and kneeling practice (muscle memory, trigger/sight picture feel)

g) preloading my trigger (saving time, getting the muscles flexed for a steady break)

h) knowing the match proceedures, taking notes and thinking about MAKING IT HAPPEN.

i) concentrating on the areas I could make the biggest improvement.

j) counting the shots (mag change timing and situational awareness)

Incidently, if anyone is interested, I shot 69gr Sierra MatchKings with 26.0gr of Varget behind it, out of a box stock Bushmaster 16" flat top 1-9" twist barrel with a cleaned up trigger, a crappy Bushmaster carry sling and a Bushnell Tactical 5-15 x 40mm scope on a riser rail.

By the 500M Match 12 finish, I had +600 rounds through an uncleaned barrel, since I shot the rifle in practice during the prior two weeks!!!

We are so proud of you (that's us in the OSA). I can say that I'm happy that you kicked my ass, very royally, too. That's what we get for coaching you from zero skills to hero abilities. I'm so glad that my snoring helped with YOUR mental management.

Just look at Sevey's performance this year. He's kicking my butt. It's all because I know how to groom you shooters into champions with my sleep apnia (spelling ?). :evil:

On a more serious note, I must go around & police these posts to remove the ranks and names of CF pers for Op Security. A factor I am not used to doing after all those years of shooting Service Rifle at Mons Range with my old Ontario Rifle club.

It sure was different seeing a bunch of CF dignitaries (right word?) of such high rank at our little lowly club's match this weekend. Were we truly worthy of such a presence of these high ranks ? :rolleyes: I'm glad that I'm not in uniform to salute all those dignitary officers, my shooting arm would get sore. :D I need all the help I can get before Match 12 500m to 100m rundown.
