Yesterday, had a hoot at the Osoyoos 1000m BR shoot held my Aubrey White. A sizzling hot day with extremely nasty wind conditions, wasps and hornets galor.
However, the company of shooters was great, the event run smoothly, and lots of shooting.
Being a fun shoot the event is very open to types of rifles. A 10lbs rifle Hunter class only allows 10X scopes. The unlimited class is well...unlimited. You shoot either for score or group depending on the relay. Three scoring shots is all that is needed with one or two sighters on paper. This simplifies and speeds up shooting. Cost was $10 per relay. The winner got 1/2 the relay entry fees.
We had all sorts of gear from the fancy customs to box stock savages. Some really good shooters too.
I campaigned three rifles a 7RM Kreiger barreled Savage (Gunsmith did the barrel rechamber and install), a 6.5-06 with a Bevan King barrel, and a Savage 270.
The first time I got on the bench I used my 7RM. After I was done, I had a score of 26 (possible 30) to win the relay and a 2 5/8" three shot group...YIKES. I will simply blame that on the rifle and the smith who did the install.
Conditions got simply horrid thereafter (so did my scores). Winds can shift within seconds and gusts over 20MPH would really stir things up. This can be a tough place to shoot but sure keeps you on your toes. How about wind flags going straight out in different directions (300yds and at the target)?
One guy shot a great 7 5/8" group, however scored ZERO (blown right off the target). Relay was for score. That's how agressive the crosswinds were. His sighter was about 10" from the dead center a minute earlier. Fun, fun, fun.
For anyone wanting a great low key way to get into LR shooting competition and shoot with some great folk, this is an event not to miss. The rules are flexible and just about anything short of 50BMG's can be used.
One of the shooters brought out a camera and transmitter. We could watch the shots hit the target on a monitor. Too bad the shooters couldn't see it. I sure could have used it later in the day.
See you there next time...
